Sea Turtles & Plastic Pollution: Prevent
Extinction With Conservation Efforts
In its report, Ever Wonder Adventure outlines what will happen to sea
turtles and their marine ecosystems if we continue to pollute waters at
our current rates.
The Environmental
Magazine estimates that
global sea turtle populations
have declined by as much
as two-thirds since the turn
of the 20th century.
With just 6.5 million currently
occupying waters, and
industrialism showing no signs
of slowing down, experts fear
that sea turtles are on the
verge of extinction.
According to Ever Wonder
Adventure, the main
reason why sea turtles
need to be protected is the
influence they have when it
comes to preserving
biodiversity.
As a keystone species, sea
turtles regulate the
populations of other
species like jellyfish and
seagrasses, preventing
their numbers from growing
out of control.
Another reason why sea turtles are important is because
they return to nest on the same beaches where they were
born.
By doing so, they redistribute sand and support the
growth of beach-dwelling organisms.
