After School Registration is Now Open
Ready set play after a day in the classroom
As teachers and kids get ready to return to the classroom in a few weeks, do you
have a plan for your child's after school care? You'll ace this back-to-school test
when you register kids for Hillsborough County Parks & Recreation After
School Program. Registration opened at noon on Monday, July 8, 2019.
Keeping school-aged children safe, supervised, and entertained when the school
day ends is a no-brainer with this economical program.
REGISTER FOR AFTER SCHOOL CARE
The After School program is part of a national movement to raise a healthier
generation of kids by encouraging healthy lifestyle choices through physical
activity and nutrition education. The program is offered to children enrolled in
grades K-8, and follows the school district calendar.
After School highlights sports, play, and active recreation in a structured
environment. The program offers both traditional activities and adaptive
activities for children with disabilities.
So when the school day ends, your child will be ready and set to play.
STILL LOOKING FOR HOMEOWNERS TO VOLUNTEER TO HOST A

Potential Flooding: Flooding is the most costly and repetitive natural disaster
affecting Hillsborough County. While residents are typically affected by inland
flooding near lakes and in areas with low-lying elevations, flooding along rivers
and coastal tidal surge are not uncommon. Flooding can occur anytime and
anywhere when heavy or steady rain occurs.
Here are six ways to prepare your property for floods:
1. Know your flood hazard by obtaining or reviewing the flood map for your
area.
2. Consider flood insurance to help protect you from the financial
devastation caused by floods. Flood damage is not usually covered by
homeowners insurance.
3. Stay safe by preparing a disaster response plan for your family and
signing up for emergency alerts.
4. Protect your property by floodproofing or retrofitting to reduce common
flood damage.
5. Build responsibly by always contacting your local building office to
obtain required permits prior to doing any type of building or land
alterations.
6. Help protect natural floodplains by reporting illegal dumping or illegal
land clearing.
Plan and Prepare for Storm Season
Rain Barrels: Let Nature Water Your
Landscape for Free
Rainwater harvesting systems irrigate landscapes, preserve tap
water
Collecting rainwater to irrigate your plants, wash your car, and use for other
purposes is a good idea.
Here's why: It reduces the use - and cost - of tap water, helps prevent erosion,
and lowers the amount of stormwater runoff from your property.
Can you harvest enough rainwater to make the effort worthwhile? Consider:
One inch of rain on a 1,000-square-foot roof yields 623 gallons of water. And
the average annual rainfall at Tampa International Airport is 46.3 inches.
That much water will fill a lot of rain barrels, each of which typically holds
about 55 gallons.
HOME IMPROVEMENTS: Thanks to neighbors improving the exterior (or
interior) of their homes. We greatly appreciate what you are doing. However, it
is important to keep contractors on schedule, remind them to clean up each day
after their work is done, do not block the streets, do not leave trailers in the street
overnight, etc. In other words, please do not leave your place looking like an
eyesore. It is not a benefit to your immediate neighbors. I know this may be
difficult but it is part of a contractor’s job. Please remind your contractors.
PARKING: Please be aware that when parking your vehicle on the road, the car
should be parked in the correct direction, i.e. in the direction of the flow of traffic
and not opposite of the traffic flow. Also, please do not block the sidewalks
making it difficult for walkers. PLEASE BE AWARE YOU CAN BE CITED
FOR INFRINGEMENTS. Florida Statutes 316.1945 –
Stopping, standing, or parking prohibited in
specified places provides that
no person shall:
(a) Stop, stand, or park a vehicle:
1. On the roadway side of any vehicle stopped or parked at the edge or
curb of a street.
2. On a sidewalk.
3. Within an intersection.
4. On a crosswalk.
. . . .
(b) Stand or park a vehicle, whether occupied or not, except
momentarily to pick up or discharge a passenger or passengers:
1.
In front of a public or private driveway.
2. Within 15 feet of a fire hydrant.
A law enforcement officer or parking enforcement specialist who
discovers a vehicle parked in violation of this section or a municipal or
county ordinance may:
(a)
Issue a ticket form as may be used by a political subdivision or
municipality to the driver.
REMINDERS ABOUT ALLIGATORS: (At least one has recently
been observed in our waters.)
1. Never feed an alligator. Feeding alligators is illegal and dangerous. When
fed, alligators can overcome their natural wariness and learn to associate
people with food.
2. Keep your distance if you see one.
3. Alligators are most active between dusk and dawn, so swim only in
designated swimming areas during daylight hours.
4. Keep pets on a leash and away from the water. Pets can resemble
alligators’ natural prey.
If you are concerned about an alligator, call FWC’s toll-free Nuisance Alligator
Hotline at 866-392-4286. For more information visit the Florida Fish and
Wildlife Conservation Commission’s alligator management program.
