Wallpapers can make any room
comfortable and homey. That’s why
many houses have them in the dining
room and bed rooms.
As much as we love a good wallpaper,
we can’t deny that it is not pleasant to
look at when it gets old and dirty.
When moving to a new home, or even
just redecorating your own home, it
can get really annoying trying to
remove old wallpaper.
If you have experienced this situation,
you may have asked yourself if you
can paint over wallpaper for a faster
and easier solution. Well, the answer
to that question is yes.
There are some things you need to
consider before covering up an old
wallpaper with paint.
If you are planning to stay in the
house for a long period of time, then
stripping and painting over a
wallpaper is worth your time and
effort.
However, if you want to paint over a
small, temporary room like a rented
office or a small bedroom, think twice
before starting to strip because it will
really take a lot of your time, money,
and effort.
Stripping the wallpaper off the walls
takes a lot of time and effort.
Considering it could be very old, you
have to be careful not to damage or
poke any holes in the wall. If you have
tried stripping the wallpaper to no
success, the clear solution is to paint
over it.
How to Paint Over Wallpaper?
1. Use the Proper Gear
Painting means you have to use
chemicals that can affect your body
when inhaled or touched.
You need to protect your eyes, nose,
mouth, and skin from anything that
might have a negative effect on it.
Here is the proper gear for painting:
Closed shoes
Gloves
Hat
Goggles or glasses
Respiratory mask
Here is the proper gear for painting:
You may think that using goggles and
respiratory masks is too much for
such a small task as painting, but this
will actually be safer, especially for
those who have asthma or lung
problems.
2. Clean the Wallpaper-Covered
Walls
Since stripping down is clearly not a
solution in repairing your walls, you
have to use other methods to get rid of
the wallpaper.
You can use T.S.P. (trisodium
phosphate) to do the job for you. Mix
the T.S.P. and water in a bucket with a
ratio of half a cup of TSP for every two
gallons of water. Follow the
instructions on the label to ensure
safety.
Apply the T.S.P. mixture to the
wallpaper with a sponge and let it dry
out. Once it has dried, use a damp rag
to carefully remove the chemical and
the wallpaper from the wall.
3. Add Adhesives in Every Corner
Before Priming
After going through the trouble of
painting over the wallpaper, peeling
layers may not be a sight to see.
In order to avoid this, add adhesives
in every corner of the wall, especially
at the top and bottom.
You can also use primer to lessen the
chances of peeling and provide a
smooth surface where the paint can
really come out perfectly.
4. Let the Primer Dry
At this point, you may rest for a while
as you wait for the primer to dry
completely.
You can take this chance to sit for a
moment and take a quick break from
all the chemicals. You can check the
label to be sure how much time the
primer needs to dry.
5. Apply the First Coat
The best way to paint over wallpaper
is to use oil-based paint because they
are great at hiding the wallpaper
patterns and stains.
You can treat the job like any other
painting jobs you did in the past: use a
paintbrush to perfectly paint the
corners of the wall and then use a
roller for the middle part.
Since you are covering up a wallpaper,
you will need more than one layer of
paint for your painting job.
6. Complete a Second Coat
After letting the first coat dry
completely, you can now proceed
with the second coat.
You may sand the walls for this step to
lessen the imperfections that may still
be lingering in the wall. Paint the top
coat with the perfect stroke and cover
up any sign of the wallpaper on your
wall.
All in all, the best way to cover up an
old wallpaper is to paint over it. There
are a lot of rules and steps to follow to
paint over a wallpaper, but if you do it
right, your house will be perfect in
any aspect.
