Post-Helene's Aftermath -- Marshall, NC Nature
School Spearheads Open Door Policy
Just outside Hot Springs, NC, a nature school blends
traditional education with nature immersion, farming,
and STEM learning, serving 100 K-8 students daily.
Founded by Deborah DeLisle, this
nature school faced devastation
during Hurricane Helene, causing
mudslides, floods, and
destruction in the town.
Despite challenges like power outages and communication breakdowns, the school
persevered by launching the Community Lighthouse Project.
DeLisle, determined to keep the school open for all
children in the area, showcased resilience and
commitment in the face of adversity.
Project Lighthouse quickly became a symbol of hope
and resilience for families, providing a place of stability
amid the chaos.
As Woodson Branch looks toward the future, the school is committed to continuing this work—not only
for enrolled students but also for the wider community.
