The Mismade Bill Drawback
One of the best close-up magic tricks, one in the repertoire of many
magicians, is the mismade dollar bill. Any magic involving money
automatically interests the audience. The mismade bill is no
exception. Learn a little about the history of the effect here:

Think about what a magical experience this is: the magician
borrows a dollar bill from an audience member, folds it up, and
when it’s unfolded, the bill has seemingly turned inside out! The
corners of the bill are at the center, and the middle of the bill is
divided into the four corners. It looks amazing!
But then . . .
The magician folds the bill again and turns it back to a normal bill
before handing it back to the volunteer. (Ho hum.) This seems
anticlimactic to me.
It would be much stronger to hand the mismade bill to the
volunteer as a souvenir. Yes, they would not be able to spend the
dollar, but they would have a souvenir that they would keep forever
and show everybody. Not only that, but they will be talking about
you as well and telling everyone what an amazing performer you
are!
The big problem with this is that the traditional mismade bills are
cut from a sheet of uncut bills purchased from the U.S. Mint. This
can end up being very expensive. The sheets (when they are
available) are sold for a premium; in cutting them, several bills are
destroyed, which drives up the cost of the prop. Magic dealers that
offer the mismade bills sell them for anywhere from $10 to $25
each. This makes giving the mismade bill away as a souvenir
prohibitively expensive unless you are commanding the kind of fees
that David Copperfield or Penn and Teller make. (Ha ha!)

Fortunately, there is now a solution that not only makes it possible
for you to give away the mismade dollar bill, but you could
potentially make $0.60 or more in extra profit each time you do the
trick! Not bad for a couple of minutes’ work, right?
In this ebook, you’ll find out how to easily do this, and what
supplies you will need and where to get them. I’ll even provide
some suggestions for performing the trick if you aren’t that good at
sleight of hand. Believe me, my sleight of hand techniques are
really bad. The most complicated sleight I perform is the crosscut

The Mismade Bill Solution
Instead of a prop cut from a sheet of bills from the U.S. Mint, this
updated version of the mismade bill trick uses a specially printed
fake bill that looks extremely realistic. The designs of the bills have
been altered just enough to avoid trouble and to be legal to use for
entertainment purposes.
These bills are the industry standard. They are made by a company
that supplies realistic-looking money for many movie and TV
productions including Young Sheldon, Hawaii 5-0, and Let’s Make
a Deal.
The bills are very affordable too. This means it’s possible for you to
give the mismade bill to your volunteer at the end of the trick
without breaking the bank. This is something they will almost
surely hang on to forever since it looks so amazing.
Another great thing about these bills is that they are made in
different denominations. The mismade bills cut from a sheet of bills
are almost always $1.00 bills. Now you have more options.
In many performances, you may indeed be using the mismade $1
bill.

Remember, I told you that you would be able to make some
additional profit by performing this new version of the trick. Now, I
can’t predict or speculate on how much you could make. But if you
are at a strolling gig or working tables at a restaurant, for instance,
and perform the trick several times during the event, that could
mean a nice extra chunk of change for you. And a little extra money

How to Cash In
Because these prop bills are specially printed by a supplier for the
entertainment industry, they can be purchased very affordably.
At the time that I am writing this, the retail price for the bills is only
$39.99 per hundred, meaning each mismade bill is only about $0.40
each! That’s a huge difference from $25.00 each!
Do the trick during a performance with the $1.00 bill, and you have
made an extra profit of $0.60! If you’re performing at a higher-end
gig and can perform the trick with either a $5 or a $20 bill, your
profit of course is much higher!
If you are performing at the home of a celebrity, such as a sports
figure or movie star, and he or she gives you a $100 bill to perform
the trick . . . well, just think about that for a moment: you’ve made
an extra profit of $99.60 in one shot! That may not happen very
often; but even if it occurs once, that would be pretty awesome.
Now, before anyone accuses me of being only interested in money,
that is not true. One of the main goals of performing is to create
happy memories and memorable experiences for your audience.
But let’s get down to brass tacks: if you are a working performer,
you have to make money so you can pay your bills. And performing
this version of the mismade dollar bill avoids the possibly awkward
situation of soliciting gratuities from your audience members. Plus,
the volunteer who gave you the bill gets a really unusual souvenir,
which continues the creation of happy memories and memorable
experiences after the actual performance. It sounds like a win-win
situation to me.

Options for Switching the Bills
You need a way to switch the real dollar bill for the mismade bill, or
you obviously don’t have a trick. If you can perform the trick either
purely by sleight of hand or with the aid of a thumb tip, then you
may not need the information in this chapter.
That said, I’m going to provide you with some magic options that
will allow you to perform the switch of the bills without sleights. Of
course, you’ll still need to rehearse to get a smooth and entertaining
presentation.
One option is Buddha Papers. The photo shows a set of Buddha
Papers that I own, rebranded as “The Phantom Folder.” I have
actually had this since the mid-1970s, and it has held up remarkably
well!

As I am writing this ebook, there is a new magic product on the

Of course, there are other magic props that can switch one object for
another too, and you may have something in mind already. But if

Q and A
Q: Are the mismade bills made with the same type of paper that the
U.S. Mint uses to print dollar bills?
A: No. These mismade bills are printed on good-quality paper, but
it’s not the same kind the Mint uses. They do feel different than the
real bills. However, I don’t think your volunteers will really pay
attention to that because they will be so surprised by the strange
appearance of the inside-out dollar bill.
Q: Can the mismade bills be folded down into eighths?
A: Because of the paper that is used, I find the mismade bills get
bulky when folded into eighths. But you can experiment and see
what works for you. If you are using a switching device like the
ones described in the last chapter, folding the bill into quarters
should be sufficient.
Q: After performing the trick, what do you do if the volunteer asks
for his real dollar bill back?
A: Give the real bill back. It’s not worth getting into a disagreement
over. But I think most audience members will be delighted to have
this impossible object as a souvenir. This will be especially true if
you begin by telling them that they won’t be able to spend the bill
when they get it back, but they will have a souvenir that they will
hang on to forever.
Q: I’ve seen mismade $2 bills advertised on a couple of magic
websites. Will this company be coming up with any new
denominations of mismade bills?
A: I don’t know the answer to that. However, if the company
decides to print mismade $2 bills or mismade $10 bills, for instance,
it would be on their website.
