About ATO Duke
Duke University, ATO Xi Chapter - Founded 1872
To bind men together in a brotherhood based upon eternal and immutable principles, with a bond as strong as right itself and as lasting as humanity ; to know no North, no South, no East, no West, but to know man as man, to teach that true men the world over should stand together. Otis Allan Glazebrook, 1880.
Alpha Tau Omega began as an idea in the mind of a young Civil War veteran who wanted peace and reconciliation. His name was Otis Allan Glazebrook. His people were defeated, many of their cities burned, much of their countryside ravaged. But Glazebrook, who had helped bury the dead of both sides, believed in a better future. He saw the bitterness and hatred that followed the silencing of the guns and knew that a true peace would come not from force of law, but rather from with the hearts of men who were willing to work to rekindle a spirit of brotherly love.

An Opening Word
Alumni of our beloved Xi Chapter of Alpha Tau
Omega, my name is Hamilton Murrah, and I am
honored to serve as our chapter's Alumni Chair.
My goal is to better connect our great current
members with the brothers that came before us.
We have a lot to share about the state of our
brotherhood, and a lot to be proud of. Our
chapter was honored with three awards this
year. Starting off, I take great pride in reporting
that the Xi Chapter of Alpha Tau Omega
continues to hold the highest GPA out of any
national chapter with a cumulative average 3.62.
Secondly, the Xi Chapter was recognized for our
general recruitment and scholarship excellence.
Finally, we received an honorable mention for
the True Merit Award. This award recognizes the overall best ATO chapter in
the country. I am even more proud to report our impact on philanthropy this
year. As many of you know, in the summer of 2017, Michael Doherty (Class of
2019) passed away. Since that time, the Xi chapter has raised over $150,000
in his honor. This year we will have several opportunities to host our alumni
and we look forward to seeing many of you at each of those. Finally, as some
of you who have already been to campus this year may have noticed, our
section on West Campus in Craven Quad is currently under renovation. For
this school year, our section is located at 300 Swift Ave. on Central Campus.
We will be returning to Craven Quad for the 2019-2020 school year. We enjoy
the tradition and foundation that our alumni have built and remain ever striving
to improve our brotherhood. We continue to recruit scholars, athletes,
philanthropists and great citizens of the Duke and Durham communities. We
thank all of you for your support of the Xi Chapter, and I look forward to seeing
you at future alumni events.
We were pleased to welcome 29 new brothers into our fraternity this past
Spring. Below you will find some information on all of them. Our new brothers
come from a wide variety of backgrounds and interests and each have a large
amount to contribute to our fraternity as a whole.

As discussed above, Michael Doherty tragically passed away two summers ago. Since then,
we have done a great amount to honor his legacy. A timeline of events follows.
May 2017 Began fundraising for the Michael Doherty Memorial endowment fund
July 2017 - Completed our initial goal of raising $100,000 to create the fund in perpetuity
October 2017 - Football tailgate concert raises $4,000, culminating at a total of $122,500
raised for the fund
November 2017 - Began fundraising to set up a bench in the Sarah P. Duke Gardens and
received an initial $10,000 donation
March 2018 - Raised $18,000 during A Day for Doh Boy, surpassing the $25,000 goal to
erect the bench
October 20, 2018 - Bench dedication ceremony open to all in the Duke Gardens where the
Doherty family will be in attendance.
The ceremony will be held at Fisher Amphitheater in the Duke Gardens at 10 am. If the
forecast shows that it will be raining at that time, the ceremony will be moved to 9 am in
Horton Hall
Brothers Jack Ditomassi('19) and Isaac Nicchitta('19) address attendees at our Spring Philanthropy, A Day for
Doh Boy(left). Brothers and guests take a moment to reminisce in their memories of Doh Boy(right).
