THE INCREASING
POPULARITY OF PATIOS
IN NEW HOMES
Just Patios
In 2022, the share of homes with patios reached another record high.
Of around one million homes started, 63.3 percent came with patios,
marking the seventh consecutive year of setting a new record. These
statistics are based on the National Association of Home Builders
(NAHB) data analysis from the U.S. Census Bureau with partial funding
from the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
America experienced a period of peace and prosperity after World War
II in the 1950s. This led to the emergence of postwar trends such as the
baby boom, a growing middle class, and an increase in home
ownership.
History of Patios
Home Extension
As a result, the suburban backyard became a popular feature of the
American lifestyle. It served as an extension of the house, providing
space for relaxation, recreation, cooking, and entertaining. The
affordability of private backyard pools and the use of new materials
such as plastic and aluminum in patio furniture further transformed the
mid-century backyard.
Increase in Popularity
Most new homes lacked patios due to a weak housing market between
2008 and 2011. However, since 2012, the number of new homes with
patios has steadily increased. This upward trend has continued for
twelve of the past thirteen years, indicating the growing popularity and
demand for homes with outdoor living spaces.
Popularity in Different Areas
The popularity of patios on new homes has increased overall, but the
regional distribution remains unchanged. In 2022, the lowest incidence
of patios was found in the Middle Atlantic and New England regions, with
only 18 percent and 21 percent of new single-family homes having patios,
respectively.
On the other hand, the highest incidence was observed in the West South
Central and South Atlantic divisions, where over 70 percent of new
homes featured patios. The Mountain states were close behind, with just
under 70 percent of new homes including patios. These findings align
with the trends observed in the previous year.
Different Patio Types
Covered patios are an excellent choice for homeowners in areas with
cold climates, providing a cozy outdoor space even in bad weather.
Open patios are perfect for warm climates, offering a refreshing spot
to enjoy the fresh air. Multifunctional patios are versatile and ideal for
homes with limited space, serving various purposes such as relaxation,
dining, or working.
The Future of Patios
The popularity of patios in new homes will likely continue to rise as
homeowners increasingly seek ways to maximize their living space
and enjoy outdoor living. Additionally, more people are looking for
ways to bring nature into their daily lives and create a home
sanctuary. Patios provide the perfect solution for both.
