ROOT CANAL
5 WAYS TO SUPPORT
RECOVERY AFTER
nobledentalcare.com
A smooth recovery after a root canal
requires aftercare in the form of managing
pain, eating the right foods and practicing
gentle oral hygiene.
MANAGE PAIN
AND SWELLING
There's a good chance you might
experience mild pain or swelling after a
root canal.
Your dentist may prescribe a pain reliever or
suggest over-the-counter pain medicine like
ibuprofen
or acetaminophen.
To treat swelling, it will help to apply an ice
pack for 15-20 minutes at a time to the
treated area
for the first 24 hours.
EAT SOFT AND
NUTRITIOUS FOOD
You'll want to avoid eating hard food like
chips, nuts and candy.
Instead, it's best to stick with soft foods like
mashed potatoes, yogurt and smoothies.
You may also find it better to eat cold foods
rather than hot.
PRACTICE GENTLE
ORAL HYGIENE
It's crucial to be very gentle when brushing your
teeth after a root canal.
When flossing, make sure to gently slide the
floss so you don't apply any pressure to the
affected tooth and gums.
Your dentist may recommend rinsing your
mouth with warm salt water after eating to
reduce bacteria and soothe inflammation.
AVOID EXCESSIVE
PRESSURE ON THE
TREATED TOOTH
You can do this by chewing
on the opposite side.
FOLLOW UP WITH
YOUR DENTIST
Following up with your dentist will
ensure the affected area
is healing properly.
They will check for signs of swelling,
tenderness and infection to see whether
any further treatment is necessary.
Some patients may need to get a crown
put on the tooth
for extra protection
and restoration.
If your dentist provides any advice,
make sure to follow the instructions.
