how it all started
Dominic and Kerry Doig
established Solomons Europe
Limited, a Chartered Quantity
Surveying practice, in 1998
following their return from
working on the Leuna Oil
Refinery in Germany. Armed
with an entrepreneurial
idea and the determination
to succeed, the business
achieved year on year growth
in the first 5 years of trading,
and to this day continues
to be a stable and growing
company.
Since Solomons inception, Dominic has
worked hard to build strong industry
relationships and is well known in his sector
across the North West & Cumbria regions,
securing a broad spread of long term Main
Contractor and specialist contracting clients
within the Solomons portfolio.
Kerry was instrumental in the growth of
Solomons as a credible professional practice,
pushing the company to achieve ISO
and Investors in People recognition in the
business’ early years – as well as becoming
an accredited RICS Consultancy and APC
Structured Training provider.
A commitment to its’ people and their
development has been a strong core of
the business since the beginning, and has
helped ensure growth and reputation for the
company over time. We are proud to say that
our Board has grown from within, promoting
on the basis of talent and commitment
to excellent client service and technical
performance, meaning we have been in a
position to share this success.
Solomons has continued to flourish thanks to
its agility, flexible approach, Intrapreneurial
spirit and desire to deliver exceptional service
to it’s clients. Since the early days, in a small
office in Lytham, we have expanded in to
other regions and now occupy 5 offices;
our Head Office in Newton le Willows, near
Warrington, serves our North West Clients and
Staff, in addition to our Crooklands office
situated between Kendal and Lancaster.
Our new Cumbrian office at Papcastle near
Cockermouth is turning heads and has
made a bold statement of commitment
in this region. Our first North East office was
opened in Hartlepool in 2014 and has has
expanded from 1 employee to a team of 15,
with plans to grow to 25 in the next 18 months.
To support this growth, in Q2 2020 we plan to
open a second North East office to serve the
Tyne & Wear regions at Bowes Business Park,
near Durham, from which we plan to secure
new clients and talent for the business.

From the outset Solomons
founders were keen to
ensure that there was ample
opportunity for those with the
drive and passion to reach
the highest levels within
the company –something
which was largely restricted
in traditional PQS practices.
This was a guiding principle
and was designed to ensure
that those with enthusiasm
and commitment for the
QS profession were able to
progress on merit, rather than
waiting for ‘vacancies’ in senior
roles to arise.
It was therefore natural that the company
would eventually see appointment to the
Board of team members who had grown and
developed with the company. Mark Coburn
and Clare White joined Solomons Board of
Directors in 2009, after demonstrating a strong
commitment to the growth and development
of the teams within Solomons and an
aptitude for supporting others in their personal
professional development - ensuring high
standards of service and quality on behalf of
our clients.
John Rossiter rejoined Solomons from Doig
& Co in May 2015 as Executive Director for
the North West Region, as part of a group
merger. John takes a lead role in training and
developing Solomons and our client teams,
with particular focus on NEC 3 & 4 contracts®.
Ian Hedley was also appointed to the Board
after a year of exceptional performance with
Solomons as Key Account Manager, single
handedlygrowing the North East regional hub
in Hartlepool.
The closely knit senior team work hard to
ensure consistently high quality of services
can be offered to our Key Clients across
the UK, and that our teams are developed
and supported to achieve their personal
professional goals.
Despite a highly competitive UK market
for both skills and services, we believe that
Solomons has a bright future and that the
services we offer will remain in high demand
for the long term. Our ability to work as an
integrated team with our Key Clients and the
agility our size and sector expertise affords,
means that we can add value, focusing on
specific project goals and objectives.

“I am passionate about Solomons Europe,
it has given me drive and focus for over 20
years, as well as the opportunity to work with
a great team and some longstanding loyal
clients.
“As a young QS I recognised the need for
technical excellence, and that postgraduate
qualifications and CPD would allow me to
stay ahead of the game and to provide a
high level of service to the clients I worked
with. This ethos still holds true today, and I
enjoy seeing the team further themselves
professionally and technically in their journey
with our business.
“My current drive is to lead and develop
the Senior Team at Solomons, developing
strategy, targets and development plans
so that they will feel able and competent
to continue to help achieve growth and
success with the business as we grow in the
years to come.”

“Dom and I started the business back in 1998,
after completing a fixed term contract on a
major multinational JV project In Germany.
Being part of such a huge project with many
diverse people and challenges was exciting,
and a massive learning curve! So at the
end of the project we took the decision to
set up on our own. We knew nothing about
business, or the challenges we might face,
but were young, focused, and had a strong
desire to do a good job and build a team of
good people around us.
“We quickly learnt that building good
relationships with staff and clients was crucial
to our future success. As an SME, we are
lucky in that we can recognise every one of
our people as individuals. It is so important
to the future success of our business that
we have a loyal team of people who feel
valued and supported. This commitment to
our grass roots values means we can deliver
excellent service to our clients, and our
people can feel invested in their projects and
challenges.”
“I joined Solomons in 2007 as a young
surveyor not knowing what to expect when
jumping in to the unknown and joining a
small company after starting out at one of
the big QS practices. Since then I’ve had the
privilege to work with some of the biggest
engineering and construction companies
in the industry, yet I can safely say that the
empowerment and support to achieve your
career aspirations at Solomons is unique and
feels fantastic.
“My role now is to ensure that Solomons’
maintains our focus on empowering our staff
to achieve their career goals, develop their
skills and focus on achieving results for their
clients, which in turn ensures that we achieve
our goals of excellent service delivery for our
clients on some of the biggest engineering
projects in the country.”

“I have over 22 years of experience working

recently Renewable Energy (Windfarms &

“I joined Solomons Europe in 2003 and
prioritised my technical development

continually updating my professional
development and helping others to develop
further; so as soon as I could I became

“I’ve been with Solomons nearly 16 years
now and in that time I’ve progressed from
an assistant to a Key Account Director and
shareholder and from a carefree youth to a

“Solomons have supported me in every step
both professionally and personally allowing
challenge, variety, progression together
with a healthy work life balance and lots of
laughs. It’s so rewarding to be part of a team
who truly care about the job they do.
“One of my first clients within Solomons joked
that our team were so easily recognisable
through their behavior and values that we
should call ourselves ‘Solomontologists’.
Treating my team with this same respect

I have been afforded the opportunity to

and become integrated members of our
client teams. Regular communication with
each client is crucial in forging long lasting

solomontrepreneurs –
making it all happen!
This is an exciting time for the North of England.
As an entrepreneurial SME, we
are committed to exploring
and optimising the business
opportunities the current shift in
Government focus is bringing to
the North of England.
The recent planned changes in IR35 legislation
make grasping these opportunities doubly
important, as client businesses see their
established resourcing models challenged and
disrupted, making way for new entrants and
approaches.
Our offices span the North East, North West
and Cumbrian regions, and we have Directors
born and bred in these locations, with a strong
commitment to bringing prosperity and growth
to our offices and the communities we call
home. This means we are able to serve our
key clients in multiple locations, providing a
consistently high standard of services and
opportunities for knowledge exchange and
innovation.
Over the last 5 years, we have worked hard to
develop an intrapreneurial culture in Solomons,
underpinned by our business development
approach to secure core Key Clients in our
regions to ensure sustainable long term growth.
For Solomons, being an Intrapreneur means
being agile and responsive to client needs,
and vigilant in spotting and securing
opportunities to become a consultant of
choice - grasping opportunities to make
a difference to client projects, whether
commercially or via efficiency improvements
and innovation.
We want to be our client’s first choice, every
time, but also to ensure our people have the
opportunity to develop and grow to achieve
their full potential, challenging themselves and
honing their skills to be the best they can be.
So we keep our teams under constant review
for opportunities to step up the ladder and
take on the next level of service delivery.
Naturally, all businesses say this sort of thing,
but we have the structures, will and culture to
make this happen in practice, and we do.
We are acutely aware that a service provider
like ourselves is only as good as the people
they employ. So we are picky in our choices
and committed to keeping promises, as
finding and securing the best talent takes
time, determination, strong principles and
concerted effort.
We invest heavily in these aspects, and try to
ensure that every member of the company is
treated as an individual, with the opportunity
to grow and progress through the business
as far as they wish. This requires equal
determination and commitment from the
individual, and our coaching and mentorship
culture seeks to challenge our teams to be
realistic and consistent in their personal growth
ambitions.
why we are different
solomons europe | about our company
14
Unlike many of our competitors
– our team are predominantly
permanent staff, and we
believe this is vital to ensure
they are invested in our business
culture, values and strategy,
and able to uphold the quality
of service and standards we
believe in.
We work hard at this aspect, with a
dedicated People & Performance Team
focused on ensuring our talented teams
can grow and develop with the business to
achieve their career goals and ambitions. This
is no easy feat and requires an equally agile
and adaptable approach to that we offer
our clients. Today’s talent is required to adapt
and flex in the face of new technology,
innovations, legislation and markets, and it
is our job to ensure our teams are confident
and able to tackle these challenges with
confidence and assurance.
Our objective is to become an integral
and vital part of our client’s project team,
bringing knowledge and experience from
other sectors and projects, to innovate and
challenge the norm. Our people are visibly
effective in what they do, sharing knowledge
and experience gleaned from past project
successes and ready to make efficiency
and process improvements to ensure robust
reporting and forecasting, ensuring better
informed decision making and risk mitigation
opportunities.
We tend to work for approximately 10 Key
Clients at a time, which enables us to provide
a focused and dedicated approach, leading
to long term, sustainable client relationships.
Each of our clients has a dedicated Key
Account Manager or Director, focused on
responsiveness and ensuring high standards of
service delivery and encouraging continuous
improvement within our project teams
We offer economic rates due to lower fixed
overheads, high utilisation, minimum overdraft
or borrowings.

solomontrepreneurs –
making it all happen!
We give honest feedback
and actively address skills
gaps through a multitude
of approaches – constantly
learning and improving our own
processes and procedures to
ensure we can practice what
we preach!
Essentially, being a Solomontrepreneur means
you are on the look out for any opportunity
to grow and develop, whether personally
or on behalf of the company. We see both
aspects with the same outcome. If our people
grow and develop in their role, our clients will
benefit from this. If they are then able to pass
their duties to the next budding intrapreneur
in the business, supporting their growth and
development, then we have the opportunity
to find a new and challenging role for the
team member. Or better still, they may even
have identified that role themselves within the
client context, and we are able to support and
encourage them to push forward and take up
a new challenge.
Everyone in Solomons is expected to act
intrapreneurially, and in return are given the
opportunity to progress and grow more swiftly
than in more hierarchical, larger consultancy
practices. We are proud to have no glass
ceilings in Solomons, if you are able and willing,
we have a role available a the next level. Our
Key Account Client model means we can
evolve naturally to support personal growth
opportunities, without exception.

social impact & pay
it forward:
As an SME, we have a passion
for the opportunity and
prosperity this resilient and
resourceful group of businesses
as a whole can bring to the
local economy. We recruit and
train local talent, we support
and innovate local projects and
initiatives, we know about the
communities we serve and we
want to be positive contributors
in all of these areas.
Whilst the larger companies have big social
impact budgets and dedicated teams, we like
to take a more hands on approach to these
aspects. For us, it’s personal…
Our Pay It Forward (#PIF #PayItForward)
initiative began in 2018, as a means of
supporting others to make a difference. The
background to this philosophy particularly
resonates for Solomons, as in the second
year of business, founders Dominic and Kerry
Doig were loaned growth funds of £20,000
by a former boss, completely on trust, which
crucially enabled them to embark on
Solomons first growth phase, allowing the
company to take the major step of employing
its first staff.
As the business has grown and developed,
Kerry & Dominic are now in the lucky position
to be able to use the established business
Solomons has become as an opportunity
to ‘Pay it Forward’ to others, mirroring the
generosity, faith and trust that was given to
them over 20 years ago, by helping others
starting out on their career and business
journeys, both inside and outside the
company.
With that in mind, in 2018, as part of the
company’s 20th Anniversary celebrations, the
Solomons Pay It Forward SME support fund was
launched, and following its success, the three
pillars of Pay It Forward have now become
embedded into the way that the company
does its business.
These pillars comprise:
• Our Futures: How the company supports
its people and the next generation of
talent to grow and develop
• Our Communities: How the company
is an active contributor to the local
communities it works alongside
• Our Industry: How the company does
its business and how we can positively
influence changes
Our Futures
Solomons have always
invested in its people, but
over the years we have
evolved and improved our
approaches to ensure we
can harness and grow talent
more effectively.
This has meant reaching out
wider to other sectors and
disciplines, supporting growth
and development both inside
and outwith our own teams.
Recent initiatives have
included the RICS APC Team
15 Programme and our
Accelerated QS conversion
programmes, supporting
talent from non traditional
backgrounds, as well as our
Career Conversion Scheme,
which supports non-cognate
graduates into a Fast Track
programme of conversion to
Quantity Surveying.
Our Communities
We are passionate
about business, and
we are acutely aware
that Solomons would
not be where it is today
without the generous and
confidence inspiring short
term loan from an ex-boss.
This injection of cash at a
crucial moment meant
we could take on our
first employees and set
Solomons on it’s path to
growth in the early years of
our business.
That is why we launched
our Who Wants to be
an Entrepreneur fund in
2018, aimed at providing
the same opportunity
to startup and fledgling
businesses, to give them
the opportunity to grow
and flourish. We have
supported 3 Cumbrian
businesses to date, as well
as an Entrepreneurs project
with a Blackpool based
youth group, to inspire kids
to develop entrepreneurial
skills and behaviours, to
help them decide their own
career options, where an
academic future may not
appeal.
Our Industry
Our industries have suffered
significant criticism over the
last decade in relation to
the way large projects and
frameworks are operated
and how supply chains and
employees are treated by
some of the big players.
With the collapse of a
number of high profile
main and sub contractors
sending shock waves
throughout the industry,
we want to take action
to support industry
improvements and positive
changes.
That is why we are
passionate supporters of
the Northern Powerhouse,
as well as regional business
groups such as BECBC
& NEPIC. We can build
strong regional voices to
bring about change and
innovation to improve
collaboration and joint
responsibility in our
industry. In addition we are
members of a number of
professional institutions such
as the RICS, Association
of Cost Engineers and the
Chambers of Commerce,
having an eye on national
initiatives and challenges.
We are developing regional
discussion groups to tackle
the current issues facing
our industry, such as the
skills shortage and financial
pressures on the supply
chain, to ensure SME’s have
a seat at the table and can
contribute to finding robust
and effective solutions to
revolutionise our industry’s
reputation.

Here are a few examples of some of the
projects we have created and supported
to date through this #PIF framework:
SME Who Wants to be an
Entrepreneur competition &
BECBC Annual Awards 2018
In 2018 Solomons Entrepreneur Fund was
launched as a means of supporting start ups
and SME’s making their first crucial steps in
business, and looking to grow. This support was
channelled through interest free loan funds of
up to £5,000 to businesses who applied, and
who were shortlisted to appear in front of a
panel of diverse professionals to pitch their
ideas and demonstrate their entrepreneurial
flair.
Shortly after the fund was launched Solomons
were approached to support the Annual
BECBC Business Awards. We considered this
carefully and spoke with Hazel Duhy, Admin
Manager of the Cluster, about the possibility of
sponsoring an award for Startups and young
SME’s . The idea being to support the fledgling
winning business through the opportunity to
win £1000 and up to £5000 in interest free loan
funds to achieve their next growth phase.
Hazel embraced our idea with her customary
enthusiasm and set about getting the wheels
in motion to make this happen – which she
ultimately did! We whittled down the entries
to two finalists, and were proud to present
the winning award and prize fund to Red Pike
Education , and also release further funds
to support runner up Little Lifers First Aid. We
continue to be closely connected with these
two businesses, and are proud to be able
to help them up the first growth rung of the
business ladder.
Team 15
As a company of Chartered Surveyors, the
concept of Team 15 was devised initially to
support our own high performing, ambitious
Surveyors through the RICS APC Pathway to
Final Assessment. However, in devising the
programme, at a cost in the order of £35,000,
our Pay it Forward philosophy again came to
the forefront and gave us cause to consider
the lack of targeted support for budding
Chartered Surveyors to achieve this career
goal – so once again we took the decision to
share our investment in our own people with
a wider cohort from industry, opening up the
sessions to those outside the business to join
the programme and form a supportive group
of peers.
Our regional Team 15 events, in Cumbria, the
North East and Warrington, are focused on
building both technical and professional skills
to achieve Chartership and support structured
career progression. To deliver these sessions,
we partnered with a number of talented
professionals from:
* APC Academy,
* Napthens Solicitors, and
* The Harrison Network
as well as our own team of Regional Directors
who have achieved Chartership and are
accredited RICS APC Assessors.
This team brings a broad range of skills and
practical experience to support a carefully
selected group of aspiring Chartered QS’s
from a variety of backgrounds and businesses.
Team 15 presents a unique opportunity to
come together as a high performing support
group, to benefit from the expertise and
mentoring of industry leading professional
trainers and speakers.
Fit District Festival
In June 2019 Solomons hosted their first
ever Festival. The idea for the event was
underpinned by the NHS 5 ways to wellbeing,
and fitted perfectly as part of the Company’s
adopted Pay it Forward philosophy. Solomons
had run annual events for staff and their
families focused on outdoors and trying new
experiences, but in the face of the heightened
concerns in the industry with regard to the
increase in mental health problems, the
company took the decision to open up the
event to other SME’s, their clients, BECBC
members and local residents, to share the
chance to try and experience new ways to
stay fit and healthy. The event was made
possible by the kindness and generosity of
fitness instructors and coaches from around
Cumbria and beyond:, and who agreed to
give their time to this first of a kind event.
The Festival offered a host of fitness activities
for attendees to try, from Wild Swimming to
Stand up Paddleboarding, Pilates and Piloxing
to Active Yoga. Those sharing their expertise
on the stage included Cumbrian SME’s Libby
Dixon Pilates, Sarah Brook Fitness, Amy Johnson
from Lifecycol and award winning luxury

Claire and Jon from Whitehaven based Better

brave participants to their limits! Attendees
also had the chance to learn new skills like
Aerial Dance from Georgi Thorns, Mindfulness

Paediatric First Aid from Natalie Groggins of
Little Lifers First Aid.
The weekend was brought to a close with live
music from Carslisle band Hardwicke Circus,
who really gave it everything and found a
whole new legion of fans on the night.
Papcastle Depot
Papcastle Depot is a recently opened hub for
SME collaboration and growth, situated near
Cockermouth.
This development has been part of a 2 year
project to transform disused warehouse
space into a vibrant, creative space to
encourage growth and innovation for both
our own business in Cumbria and other like
minded companies seeking a vibrant and
collaborative office environment.
The company has developed this space to
achieve its own planned Cumbrian growth
and expansion, but within the Pay it Forward
philosophy, once again we plan to share this
opportunity with others to grow and develop
with us. We hope this facility will be a stepping
stone for start ups and SME’s in the region to
take the first steps in building their business – in
a supportive and inspiring space, and will be
offering a rent free period of 6 months to one
lucky SME businesses.
Papcastle Depot is also already home to
Social Enterprise, All Together Cumbria, who
have been gifted this home by Solomons for
a three year rent free period to help them
achieve their community impact goals.

how it all started
Dominic and Kerry Doig
established Solomons Europe
Limited, a Chartered Quantity
Surveying practice, in 1998
following their return from
working on the Leuna Oil
Refinery in Germany. Armed
with an entrepreneurial
idea and the determination
to succeed, the business
achieved year on year growth
in the first 5 years of trading,
and to this day continues
to be a stable and growing
company.
Since Solomons inception, Dominic has
worked hard to build strong industry
relationships and is well known in his sector
across the North West & Cumbria regions,
securing a broad spread of long term Main
Contractor and specialist contracting clients
within the Solomons portfolio.
Kerry was instrumental in the growth of
Solomons as a credible professional practice,
pushing the company to achieve ISO
and Investors in People recognition in the
business’ early years – as well as becoming
an accredited RICS Consultancy and APC
Structured Training provider.
A commitment to its’ people and their
development has been a strong core of
the business since the beginning, and has
helped ensure growth and reputation for the
company over time. We are proud to say that
our Board has grown from within, promoting
on the basis of talent and commitment
to excellent client service and technical
performance, meaning we have been in a
position to share this success.
Solomons has continued to flourish thanks to
its agility, flexible approach, Intrapreneurial
spirit and desire to deliver exceptional service
to it’s clients. Since the early days, in a small
office in Lytham, we have expanded in to
other regions and now occupy 5 offices;
our Head Office in Newton le Willows, near
Warrington, serves our North West Clients and
Staff, in addition to our Crooklands office
situated between Kendal and Lancaster.
Our new Cumbrian office at Papcastle near
Cockermouth is turning heads and has
made a bold statement of commitment
in this region. Our first North East office was
opened in Hartlepool in 2014 and has has
expanded from 1 employee to a team of 15,
with plans to grow to 25 in the next 18 months.
To support this growth, in Q2 2020 we plan to
open a second North East office to serve the
Tyne & Wear regions at Bowes Business Park,
near Durham, from which we plan to secure
new clients and talent for the business.

From the outset Solomons
founders were keen to
ensure that there was ample
opportunity for those with the
drive and passion to reach
the highest levels within
the company –something
which was largely restricted
in traditional PQS practices.
This was a guiding principle
and was designed to ensure
that those with enthusiasm
and commitment for the
QS profession were able to
progress on merit, rather than
waiting for ‘vacancies’ in senior
roles to arise.
It was therefore natural that the company
would eventually see appointment to the
Board of team members who had grown and
developed with the company. Mark Coburn
and Clare White joined Solomons Board of
Directors in 2009, after demonstrating a strong
commitment to the growth and development
of the teams within Solomons and an
aptitude for supporting others in their personal
professional development - ensuring high
standards of service and quality on behalf of
our clients.
John Rossiter rejoined Solomons from Doig
& Co in May 2015 as Executive Director for
the North West Region, as part of a group
merger. John takes a lead role in training and
developing Solomons and our client teams,
with particular focus on NEC 3 & 4 contracts®.
Ian Hedley was also appointed to the Board
after a year of exceptional performance with
Solomons as Key Account Manager, single
handedlygrowing the North East regional hub
in Hartlepool.
The closely knit senior team work hard to
ensure consistently high quality of services
can be offered to our Key Clients across
the UK, and that our teams are developed
and supported to achieve their personal
professional goals.
Despite a highly competitive UK market
for both skills and services, we believe that
Solomons has a bright future and that the
services we offer will remain in high demand
for the long term. Our ability to work as an
integrated team with our Key Clients and the
agility our size and sector expertise affords,
means that we can add value, focusing on
specific project goals and objectives.

“I am passionate about Solomons Europe,
it has given me drive and focus for over 20
years, as well as the opportunity to work with
a great team and some longstanding loyal
clients.
“As a young QS I recognised the need for
technical excellence, and that postgraduate
qualifications and CPD would allow me to
stay ahead of the game and to provide a
high level of service to the clients I worked
with. This ethos still holds true today, and I
enjoy seeing the team further themselves
professionally and technically in their journey
with our business.
“My current drive is to lead and develop
the Senior Team at Solomons, developing
strategy, targets and development plans
so that they will feel able and competent
to continue to help achieve growth and
success with the business as we grow in the
years to come.”

“Dom and I started the business back in 1998,
after completing a fixed term contract on a
major multinational JV project In Germany.
Being part of such a huge project with many
diverse people and challenges was exciting,
and a massive learning curve! So at the
end of the project we took the decision to
set up on our own. We knew nothing about
business, or the challenges we might face,
but were young, focused, and had a strong
desire to do a good job and build a team of
good people around us.
“We quickly learnt that building good
relationships with staff and clients was crucial
to our future success. As an SME, we are
lucky in that we can recognise every one of
our people as individuals. It is so important
to the future success of our business that
we have a loyal team of people who feel
valued and supported. This commitment to
our grass roots values means we can deliver
excellent service to our clients, and our
people can feel invested in their projects and
challenges.”
“I joined Solomons in 2007 as a young
surveyor not knowing what to expect when
jumping in to the unknown and joining a
small company after starting out at one of
the big QS practices. Since then I’ve had the
privilege to work with some of the biggest
engineering and construction companies
in the industry, yet I can safely say that the
empowerment and support to achieve your
career aspirations at Solomons is unique and
feels fantastic.
“My role now is to ensure that Solomons’
maintains our focus on empowering our staff
to achieve their career goals, develop their
skills and focus on achieving results for their
clients, which in turn ensures that we achieve
our goals of excellent service delivery for our
clients on some of the biggest engineering

who truly care about the job they do.
“One of my first clients within Solomons joked

solomontrepreneurs –
making it all happen!
This is an exciting time for the North of England.
As an entrepreneurial SME, we
are committed to exploring
and optimising the business
opportunities the current shift in
Government focus is bringing to
the North of England.
The recent planned changes in IR35 legislation
make grasping these opportunities doubly
important, as client businesses see their
established resourcing models challenged and
disrupted, making way for new entrants and
approaches.
Our offices span the North East, North West
and Cumbrian regions, and we have Directors
born and bred in these locations, with a strong
commitment to bringing prosperity and growth
to our offices and the communities we call
home. This means we are able to serve our
key clients in multiple locations, providing a
consistently high standard of services and
opportunities for knowledge exchange and
innovation.
Over the last 5 years, we have worked hard to
develop an intrapreneurial culture in Solomons,
underpinned by our business development
approach to secure core Key Clients in our
regions to ensure sustainable long term growth.
For Solomons, being an Intrapreneur means
being agile and responsive to client needs,
and vigilant in spotting and securing
opportunities to become a consultant of
choice - grasping opportunities to make
a difference to client projects, whether
commercially or via efficiency improvements
and innovation.
We want to be our client’s first choice, every
time, but also to ensure our people have the
opportunity to develop and grow to achieve
their full potential, challenging themselves and
honing their skills to be the best they can be.
So we keep our teams under constant review
for opportunities to step up the ladder and
take on the next level of service delivery.
Naturally, all businesses say this sort of thing,
but we have the structures, will and culture to
make this happen in practice, and we do.
We are acutely aware that a service provider
like ourselves is only as good as the people
they employ. So we are picky in our choices
and committed to keeping promises, as
finding and securing the best talent takes
time, determination, strong principles and
concerted effort.
We invest heavily in these aspects, and try to
ensure that every member of the company is
treated as an individual, with the opportunity
to grow and progress through the business
as far as they wish. This requires equal
determination and commitment from the
individual, and our coaching and mentorship
culture seeks to challenge our teams to be
realistic and consistent in their personal growth
ambitions.
why we are different
solomons europe | about our company
14
Unlike many of our competitors
– our team are predominantly
permanent staff, and we
believe this is vital to ensure
they are invested in our business
culture, values and strategy,
and able to uphold the quality
of service and standards we
believe in.
We work hard at this aspect, with a
dedicated People & Performance Team
focused on ensuring our talented teams
can grow and develop with the business to
achieve their career goals and ambitions. This
is no easy feat and requires an equally agile
and adaptable approach to that we offer
our clients. Today’s talent is required to adapt
and flex in the face of new technology,
innovations, legislation and markets, and it
is our job to ensure our teams are confident
and able to tackle these challenges with
confidence and assurance.
Our objective is to become an integral
and vital part of our client’s project team,
bringing knowledge and experience from
other sectors and projects, to innovate and
challenge the norm. Our people are visibly
effective in what they do, sharing knowledge
and experience gleaned from past project
successes and ready to make efficiency
and process improvements to ensure robust
reporting and forecasting, ensuring better
informed decision making and risk mitigation
opportunities.
We tend to work for approximately 10 Key
Clients at a time, which enables us to provide
a focused and dedicated approach, leading
to long term, sustainable client relationships.
Each of our clients has a dedicated Key
Account Manager or Director, focused on
responsiveness and ensuring high standards of
service delivery and encouraging continuous
improvement within our project teams
We offer economic rates due to lower fixed
overheads, high utilisation, minimum overdraft
or borrowings.

solomontrepreneurs –
making it all happen!
We give honest feedback
and actively address skills
gaps through a multitude
of approaches – constantly
learning and improving our own
processes and procedures to
ensure we can practice what
we preach!
Essentially, being a Solomontrepreneur means
you are on the look out for any opportunity
to grow and develop, whether personally
or on behalf of the company. We see both
aspects with the same outcome. If our people
grow and develop in their role, our clients will
benefit from this. If they are then able to pass
their duties to the next budding intrapreneur
in the business, supporting their growth and
development, then we have the opportunity
to find a new and challenging role for the
team member. Or better still, they may even
have identified that role themselves within the
client context, and we are able to support and
encourage them to push forward and take up
a new challenge.
Everyone in Solomons is expected to act
intrapreneurially, and in return are given the
opportunity to progress and grow more swiftly
than in more hierarchical, larger consultancy
practices. We are proud to have no glass
ceilings in Solomons, if you are able and willing,
we have a role available a the next level. Our
Key Account Client model means we can
evolve naturally to support personal growth
opportunities, without exception.

social impact & pay
it forward:
As an SME, we have a passion
for the opportunity and
prosperity this resilient and
resourceful group of businesses
as a whole can bring to the
local economy. We recruit and
train local talent, we support
and innovate local projects and
initiatives, we know about the
communities we serve and we
want to be positive contributors
in all of these areas.
Whilst the larger companies have big social
impact budgets and dedicated teams, we like
to take a more hands on approach to these
aspects. For us, it’s personal…
Our Pay It Forward (#PIF #PayItForward)
initiative began in 2018, as a means of
supporting others to make a difference. The
background to this philosophy particularly
resonates for Solomons, as in the second
year of business, founders Dominic and Kerry
Doig were loaned growth funds of £20,000
by a former boss, completely on trust, which
crucially enabled them to embark on
Solomons first growth phase, allowing the
company to take the major step of employing
its first staff.
As the business has grown and developed,
Kerry & Dominic are now in the lucky position
to be able to use the established business
Solomons has become as an opportunity
to ‘Pay it Forward’ to others, mirroring the
generosity, faith and trust that was given to
them over 20 years ago, by helping others
starting out on their career and business
journeys, both inside and outside the
company.
With that in mind, in 2018, as part of the
company’s 20th Anniversary celebrations, the
Solomons Pay It Forward SME support fund was
launched, and following its success, the three
pillars of Pay It Forward have now become
embedded into the way that the company
does its business.
These pillars comprise:
• Our Futures: How the company supports
its people and the next generation of
talent to grow and develop
• Our Communities: How the company
is an active contributor to the local
communities it works alongside
• Our Industry: How the company does
its business and how we can positively
influence changes
Our Futures
Solomons have always
invested in its people, but
over the years we have
evolved and improved our
approaches to ensure we
can harness and grow talent
more effectively.
This has meant reaching out
wider to other sectors and
disciplines, supporting growth
and development both inside
and outwith our own teams.
Recent initiatives have
included the RICS APC Team
15 Programme and our
Accelerated QS conversion
programmes, supporting
talent from non traditional
backgrounds, as well as our
Career Conversion Scheme,
which supports non-cognate
graduates into a Fast Track
programme of conversion to
Quantity Surveying.
Our Communities
We are passionate
about business, and
we are acutely aware
that Solomons would
not be where it is today
without the generous and
confidence inspiring short
term loan from an ex-boss.
This injection of cash at a
crucial moment meant
we could take on our
first employees and set
Solomons on it’s path to
growth in the early years of
our business.
That is why we launched
our Who Wants to be
an Entrepreneur fund in
2018, aimed at providing
the same opportunity
to startup and fledgling
businesses, to give them
the opportunity to grow
and flourish. We have
supported 3 Cumbrian
businesses to date, as well
as an Entrepreneurs project
with a Blackpool based
youth group, to inspire kids
to develop entrepreneurial
skills and behaviours, to
help them decide their own
career options, where an
academic future may not
appeal.
Our Industry
Our industries have suffered
significant criticism over the
last decade in relation to
the way large projects and
frameworks are operated
and how supply chains and
employees are treated by
some of the big players.
With the collapse of a
number of high profile
main and sub contractors
sending shock waves
throughout the industry,
we want to take action
to support industry
improvements and positive
changes.
That is why we are
passionate supporters of
the Northern Powerhouse,
as well as regional business
groups such as BECBC
& NEPIC. We can build
strong regional voices to
bring about change and
innovation to improve
collaboration and joint
responsibility in our
industry. In addition we are
members of a number of
professional institutions such
as the RICS, Association
of Cost Engineers and the
Chambers of Commerce,
having an eye on national
initiatives and challenges.
We are developing regional
discussion groups to tackle
the current issues facing
our industry, such as the
skills shortage and financial
pressures on the supply
chain, to ensure SME’s have
a seat at the table and can
contribute to finding robust
and effective solutions to
revolutionise our industry’s
reputation.

Here are a few examples of some of the
projects we have created and supported
to date through this #PIF framework:
SME Who Wants to be an
Entrepreneur competition &
BECBC Annual Awards 2018
In 2018 Solomons Entrepreneur Fund was
launched as a means of supporting start ups
and SME’s making their first crucial steps in
business, and looking to grow. This support was
channelled through interest free loan funds of
up to £5,000 to businesses who applied, and
who were shortlisted to appear in front of a
panel of diverse professionals to pitch their
ideas and demonstrate their entrepreneurial
flair.
Shortly after the fund was launched Solomons
were approached to support the Annual
BECBC Business Awards. We considered this
carefully and spoke with Hazel Duhy, Admin
Manager of the Cluster, about the possibility of
sponsoring an award for Startups and young
SME’s . The idea being to support the fledgling
winning business through the opportunity to
win £1000 and up to £5000 in interest free loan
funds to achieve their next growth phase.
Hazel embraced our idea with her customary
enthusiasm and set about getting the wheels
in motion to make this happen – which she
ultimately did! We whittled down the entries
to two finalists, and were proud to present
the winning award and prize fund to Red Pike
Education , and also release further funds
to support runner up Little Lifers First Aid. We
continue to be closely connected with these
two businesses, and are proud to be able
to help them up the first growth rung of the
business ladder.
Team 15
As a company of Chartered Surveyors, the
concept of Team 15 was devised initially to
support our own high performing, ambitious
Surveyors through the RICS APC Pathway to
Final Assessment. However, in devising the
programme, at a cost in the order of £35,000,
our Pay it Forward philosophy again came to
the forefront and gave us cause to consider
the lack of targeted support for budding
Chartered Surveyors to achieve this career
goal – so once again we took the decision to
share our investment in our own people with
a wider cohort from industry, opening up the
sessions to those outside the business to join
the programme and form a supportive group
of peers.
Our regional Team 15 events, in Cumbria, the
North East and Warrington, are focused on
building both technical and professional skills
to achieve Chartership and support structured
career progression. To deliver these sessions,
we partnered with a number of talented
professionals from:
* APC Academy,
* Napthens Solicitors, and
* The Harrison Network
as well as our own team of Regional Directors
who have achieved Chartership and are
accredited RICS APC Assessors.
This team brings a broad range of skills and
practical experience to support a carefully
selected group of aspiring Chartered QS’s
from a variety of backgrounds and businesses.
Team 15 presents a unique opportunity to
come together as a high performing support
group, to benefit from the expertise and
mentoring of industry leading professional
trainers and speakers.
Fit District Festival
In June 2019 Solomons hosted their first
ever Festival. The idea for the event was
underpinned by the NHS 5 ways to wellbeing,
and fitted perfectly as part of the Company’s
adopted Pay it Forward philosophy. Solomons
had run annual events for staff and their
families focused on outdoors and trying new
experiences, but in the face of the heightened
concerns in the industry with regard to the
increase in mental health problems, the
company took the decision to open up the
event to other SME’s, their clients, BECBC
members and local residents, to share the
chance to try and experience new ways to
stay fit and healthy. The event was made
possible by the kindness and generosity of
fitness instructors and coaches from around
Cumbria and beyond:, and who agreed to
give their time to this first of a kind event.
The Festival offered a host of fitness activities
for attendees to try, from Wild Swimming to
Stand up Paddleboarding, Pilates and Piloxing
to Active Yoga. Those sharing their expertise
on the stage included Cumbrian SME’s Libby
Dixon Pilates, Sarah Brook Fitness, Amy Johnson
from Lifecycol and award winning luxury
retreat coaches, James and Claire Davis from
38 degrees North. Those offstage included
Claire and Jon from Whitehaven based Better
Bodies UK, who set up and ran a challenge
area on the day, which pushed some of the
brave participants to their limits! Attendees
also had the chance to learn new skills like
Aerial Dance from Georgi Thorns, Mindfulness
from Martin Summerfield of Anchorpoint and
Paediatric First Aid from Natalie Groggins of
Little Lifers First Aid.
The weekend was brought to a close with live
music from Carslisle band Hardwicke Circus,
who really gave it everything and found a
whole new legion of fans on the night.
Papcastle Depot
Papcastle Depot is a recently opened hub for
SME collaboration and growth, situated near
Cockermouth.
This development has been part of a 2 year
project to transform disused warehouse
space into a vibrant, creative space to
encourage growth and innovation for both
our own business in Cumbria and other like
minded companies seeking a vibrant and
collaborative office environment.
The company has developed this space to
achieve its own planned Cumbrian growth
and expansion, but within the Pay it Forward
philosophy, once again we plan to share this
opportunity with others to grow and develop
with us. We hope this facility will be a stepping
stone for start ups and SME’s in the region to
take the first steps in building their business – in
a supportive and inspiring space, and will be
offering a rent free period of 6 months to one
lucky SME businesses.
Papcastle Depot is also already home to
Social Enterprise, All Together Cumbria, who
have been gifted this home by Solomons for
a three year rent free period to help them
achieve their community impact goals.
