Technical Bulletin
AVANEL® S 70
ANIONIC SURFACTANT

HELPING MAKE PRODUCTS BETTER™
The AVANEL family of surfactants was developed by BASF
Corporation based on the general structure:

HYDROPHOBE - ETHYLENE OXIDE CHAIN - SULFONATE

The hydrophobe can be any hydrocarbon, and the ethylene oxide
(EO) chain length can be varied. This versatility leads to a wide
range of AVANEL surfactant structures.

AVANEL surfactants are unique because the ethylene oxide
chain gives certain nonionic characteristics to the products, and
the sulfonate group provides certain anionic characteristics.
These products are extremely stable over a wide range of pH
and electrolyte concentrations. The key features of AVANEL
surfactants are listed below:

Excellent hard water tolerance

Hydrolytic stability over the entire pH range

Biodegradability

Oxidative stability in hypochlorite and oxygen bleaches

Thermal stability

High electrolyte tolerance

Excellent rinsability

Promotes sheeting action

Extremely mild to skin

Good emulsification characteristics

Low critical micelle concentrations

AVANEL S 70 Surfactant is made by a proprietary manufacturing
procedure which is patented by BASF Corporation. With this
process, AVANEL S 70 Surfactant is made with exceptional
purity.

It does not contain the by-products seen in the competitive
product. As a result, AVANEL S 70 Surfactant has performance
advantages over the competitive product.

AVANEL S 70 Surfactant has many applications such as
cosmetics, cleaning products and emulsion polymerization.

Storage And Handling
AVANEL S 70 Surfactant should be stored at temperatures
between 32°F and 120°F, and not allowed to freeze. Should the
product freeze, it should be returned to room temperature and
mixed gently to insure product uniformity.
Shelf Life
BASF will endorse the results on the certificate of analysis for a
period of up to 6 months from the date of manufacture for
material in original, unopened, properly stored containers.
Beyond 6 months, we recommend the quality of the material be
confirmed prior to use, by retesting the certificate of analysis
parameters.

Please refer to the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for this
product for instructions on safe and proper handling and disposal.
