4. FIRST AID MEASURES
FIRST AID PROCEDURES
Move victim to fresh air. Give artificial respiration ONLY if breathing has stopped. Give
cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) if there is no breathing AND no pulse. Obtain medical attention
IMMEDIATELY.
Inhalation:
Prompt removal of the material is essential. Flush skin with running water and wash affected areas
thoroughly with soap and water. Start flushing while removing contaminated clothing. Obtain medical
attention IMMEDIATELY.
Skin Contact:
Prompt removal of the material is essential. Immediately flush eyes with running water for a minimum of
20 minutes. Hold eyelids open during flushing. If irritation persists, repeat flushing. Obtain medical
attention IMMEDIATELY.
Eye Contact:
Do not attempt to give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. If victim is alert and not
convulsing, rinse mouth out and give 1/2 to 1 glass of water to dilute material. IMMEDIATELY contact
local Poison Control Centre. Vomiting should only be induced under the direction of a physician or a
poison control centre. If spontaneous vomiting occurs, have victim lean forward with head down to
avoid breathing in of vomitus, rinse mouth and administer more water. IMMEDIATELY transport victim
to an emergency facility.
Ingestion:
This product contains materials that may cause severe pneumonitis if aspirated. If ingestion has
occurred less than 2 hours earlier, carry out careful gastric lavage; use endotracheal cuff if available, to
prevent aspiration. Observe patient for respiratory difficulty from aspiration pneumonitis. Give artificial
resuscitation and appropriate chemotherapy if respiration is depressed.
Treatment of large quantity phosphate salts ingestion should take into consideration both anionic and
cation portion of the molecule. The following treatments should be considered for the specified group(s)
of the phosphate salts found in this product: All phosphate salts, except calcium salts, have a
hypothetical risk of hypocalcemia, so calcium levels should be monitored. Sodium salts have a
hypothetical risk of hypernatremia. In addition to calcium levels, sodium and phosphate levels should
be monitored.
Medical conditions that may be aggravated by exposure to this product include neurological and
cardiovascular disorders, diseases of the skin, eyes or respiratory tract, preexisting liver and kidney
disorders.
Note to Physicians:
Skin contact can cause irritation, especially under the finger nails (and other confined spaces such as
under rings or watch bands). May cause defatting, drying and cracking of the skin. Prolonged and
repeated contact may lead to dermatitis.
Skin Contact:
A single, prolonged skin exposure is not likely to result in the absorption of toxic amounts of the material.
Skin Absorption:
Vapours from this product are irritating to the eyes. Splashes to the eye may cause severe irritation,
redness and pain.
Eye Contact:
This product causes irritation, a burning sensation of the mouth and throat and abdominal pain.
Ingestion of large quantities of phosphate salts (over 1.0 grams for an adult) may cause an osmotic
catharsis resulting in diarrhea and probable abdominal cramps. Larger doses such as 4-8 grams will
almost certainly cause these effects in everyone. In healthy individuals most of the ingested salt will be
excreted in the feces with the diarrhea and, thus, not cause any systemic toxicity. Doses greater than
10 grams hypothetically may cause systemic toxicity. (3) Phosphate salts have been studied
extensively since they are used in food additives. Toxic effects on the kidney, parathyroid glands and
bones have been reported in experimental animals exposed to high oral doses. These high doses are
not considered relevant to occupational exposure. (4)
Ingestion:
Effects (irritancy) on the skin and eyes may be delayed, and damage may occur without the sensation
or onset of pain. Strict adherence to first aid measures following any exposure is essential.
Contains a phosphate salt. May cause kidney damage, hypocalcemic tetany and metabolic acidosis.
Signs and symptoms of kidney damage generally progress from oliguria, to blood in the urine, to total
renal failure. Metabolic acidosis is a condition that describes a decreased pH and bicarbonate
concentration in the body fluids. Since phosphates are slowly and incompletely absorbed [in the gut],
systemic reactions are unlikely when these salts are swallowed. Polyphosphates are thought to be
hydrolyzed to orthophosphates before absorption, which may induce a metabolic acidosis. If
appreciable amounts of the intact polymer are absorbed from the alimentary tract, hypocalcemic tetany
(muscular contraction, pains, tingling, etc., caused by a deficiency of calcium salts) may be a danger
due to the binding of ionized calcium. (3) All phosphate salts, except calcium salts, have a hypothetical
risk of hypocalcemia. (8) Sodium salts have a hypothetical risk of hypernatremia.

contamination. Ventilate enclosed spaces. Notify applicable government authority if release is
reportable or could adversely affect the environment.

and apron should be worn. Vent container frequently, and more often in warm weather, to relieve
pressure.
Handling Practices:
See Section 8, "Engineering Controls".
Ventilation Requirements:
Use only with adequate ventilation and avoid breathing aerosols ( vapours or mists ). Avoid contact with
eyes, skin or clothing. Wash thoroughly with soap and water after handling. Wash contaminated
clothing thoroughly before re-use. Do not use cutting or welding torches on empty drums that contained
this material/product.
Other Precautions:
STORAGE
See below.

of time. No apparent adverse effects resulted from the ingestion of 6 grams for 15 days by 2 adults. (4)
Diarrhea resulted from administration of 250,000 mg/Kg of Monosodium Phosphate in rats, guinea pigs
and rabbits. (4)
No differences were observed compared to non-exposed animals after ingestion of up to 370 mg/kg in
mice and up to 410 mg/kg in rats during pregnancy. These doses would not be expected to cause
maternal toxicity. (4)
A negative result was obtained in a bacterial assay, with and without metabolic activation. (4)

12. ECOLOGICAL INFORMATION
Not available. May be harmful to aquatic life. Toxicity is primarily associated with pH.
Ecotoxicity:
Although a principal problem of phosphates in the environment is not directly related to human health,
there is considerable concern about the effects of phosphorous from various sources on water quality.
Phosphate is a major cause of the eutrophication process in lakes and ponds.
Eutrophication is a process where an ecosystem, rich in nutrients and therefore supporting a dense
plant population, kills animal life by depriving it of oxygen.
Inorganic phosphates in contact with the soil, sub-surface or surface waters may be taken up by plants
and utilized as essential nutrients. Phosphates may also form preciptates usually with calcium or
magnesium. The resultant compounds are insoluble in water and become a part of the soil or
sediment. The term biodegradability, as such, is not applicable to inorganic compounds. (3) Can be
dangerous if allowed to enter drinking water intakes. Do not contaminate domestic or irrigation water
supplies, lakes, streams, ponds, or rivers.
Environmental Fate:
Will not occur.
Hazardous Polymerization:
High temperatures, sparks, open flames and all other sources of ignition. Decompositon will occur
above 169 °C. ( 4 ) Keep from freezing. Keep tightly closed to protect quality. Avoid moisture
contamination.
Conditions to Avoid:
Strong oxidizers. Strong acids. Strong bases. Magnesium Methenamine. Contact with acids will liberate
Zinc and its alloys. Black iron. Brass. Aluminum and its alloys. Mild steel. Lead. Bronze. Concrete.
Cement.
Materials to Avoid:
Thermal decomposition products are toxic and may include oxides of sodium, phosphorus and irritating
gases.
