Dana Shores is a small paradise nestled in urban convenience. Surrounded by Rocky Point Golf Course, Skyway Park, Tampa Airport’s scenic reserve, the Courtney Campbell Trail, and the waters of Tampa Bay, we’re always close to nature and have direct access to a variety of outdoor activities. Yet we are only one stoplight away from Tampa’s award-winning international airport and Westshore District,Florida’s largest office community boasting some of Tampa’s finest restaurants along with world-class shopping.
Dana Shores is unique in many ways that tie back to real estate’s basic adage: location, location, location! Still, even more loved than our location are our people — bound together by a love of the outdoors, a work-hard/play-hard attitude, and old-fashioned neighborhood values.

THE SPRING INTO SUMMER TGIF SO
MUCH FUN!
The Dana Shores Women’s Club (DSWC) celebrated
our transition into summer with our annual TGIF on
Friday, June 2. Fifty-five neighbors from Dana Shores,
Pelican Island, and Sweetwater gathered at the Rocky
Point Golf Course (RPGC) for drinks, dinner, dancing, and a chance to win! Even
though our live entertainment canceled at the last minute, we owe a big thank you
to LeAnn Anseeuw for putting together a great playlist for us.
Thank you to Tina Mawn, Kim Hajaistron, and Pat Bailey for their assistance
with table decorations and preparations before the party. We would like to
congratulate the following winners of our 50/50 raffle and silent auction items:
Allison Roberts - Dana Shores (50/50 raffle and the Yeti cooler), Michael
Jordan - Sweetwater (2 Yeti Rambler Colsters and Sam Adams Summer Ale, 18
holes of golf for two at RPGC, and the hammock chair swing), Bob Saltzman –
Dana Shores (18 holes of golf for 2 at RPGC), and Holly Simmons – Dana Shores
(“Everything Dana Shores” garden container, 2
large Yeti tumblers with the Dana Shores logo
etching, $50 gift certificate to Bahama Breeze).
The DSWC would like to thank the following
vendors for their generous donations to the silent
auction: Jason and Nicole Gulledge from
Playground King
(hammock chair swing),
Rocky Point Golf Course (4 rounds of golf with
cart), Bahama Breeze ($50 gift certificate),
Decks & Docks Lumber Co and Danny and
LeAnn Anseeuw with Waterfront Engineering
(YETI Cooler and Colsters), Julie Bowers
(pineapple mosaic planter), and the DSWC (YETI
tumblers with DS etching). The DSWC netted
approximately $700 and these funds will be used
toward ongoing neighborhood improvements and
upcoming projects.
LET’S GET TO KNOW EACH OTHER
All Dana Shores residents are invited to the DSWC’s
first ever “new-neighbor happy hour” on Friday,
August 18, from 6 – 9 p.m. at the Rocky Point Golf
Course. This is a family event.
We have had many new residents, both homeowners and
renters, move into our Dana Shores community in the
last few years and, if we haven’t met you already, we are
looking forward to that opportunity.
The bar will be open and Jim and Deb at the clubhouse
will have a great family friendly menu available. If you
have ever wondered what the Dana Shores Civic
Association (DSCA) and the Dana Shores Women’s
Club (DSWC) do, this is a great opportunity to find out
and meet lots of your neighbors! Please watch for more
details in the July and August Shore Lines. An Evite will
also be sent out in July. (If you do not yet receive e-
mails or Evites from our community and would like to,
please e-mail us at info@danashores.com. We can also
get you signed up for lost and found, major project
updates, and neighborhood watch.)

BOATING THIS SUMMER? A FEW INSIGHTS
TO HELP KEEP IT FUN!
New IDLE SPEED Signs Posted Near the
Courtney Campbell Boat Ramp
To curtail an alarmingly high rate of boating
accidents in the area, the channel is now a no-
wake zone for 100 yards on each side of the ramp.
Please help law enforcement and other boaters by
adhering to the new speed limit.
Planning for Mother Nature
When mother nature raises a harsh hand, it can be tough on the water.
It’s these bad experiences that likely led to the expression, “Better to
be on land wishing you were on the water than being on the water
wishing you were on land.”
To help our resident
avoid such times, we’ve
listed several weather-
related sites on the Dana
Shores website.
One of these resources is
new to many people:
NOAA’s Wavecast.
Because we have found
it so valuable, we have
worked directly with
NOAA
to
request
ongoing access to this information. The site allows you to open a pdf
showing wave heights 12-, 24-, 36-, and 48-hours out. Times are
given in Zulu time, and a converter is also listed on our site. Although
predictions are never perfect, we’ve found this to be a superior tool
for planning any offshore (and even inshore) boating trip.
These charts and other boating resources can be
found on our website. You may log in to the
Danashores.com website, follow this

COUNTY WATER RESTRICTION HAVE
BEEN TIGHTENED
District hydrologists report a rainfall deficit of eleven inches since
the start of the dry season last October, resulting in the driest dry
season in the past 103 years.
Lawn watering has been reduced to once per week and allowable
watering hours are also reduced. Additionally, there are now limits
on car washing. Some exceptions exist for new lawns and plants.
Micro-irrigation and hand watering of non-lawn areas are still al-
lowed any day.
Restrictions will remain in effect through August 1, 2017. Additional
details may be found at http://WaterMatters.org/restrictions

MORE ON TAYLOR MORRISON:
POTENTIAL REDEVELOPMENT OF THE SHRINERS/A LA CARTE PROPERTY
In our last newsletter, we briefly introduced our potential new neighbor, homebuilder Taylor Morrison, with an overview of the firm’s efforts
to purchase and redevelop the current home to the Shriners and A La Carte Pavilion on Dana Shores Drive. Taylor Morrison’s plans remain
on track to close the purchase agreement in August 2017, with a leaseback to the Shriners/A La Carte through the end of the year.
At the Dana Shores Civic Association meeting in April, representatives from Taylor Morrison presented Dana Shores and Pelican Island
homeowners an overview of their plans. They pointed to some recent projects in Hillsborough County (Old Memorial, Ladera, Palms at Citrus
Park, Terracina, Esplanade of Tampa) to indicate the character of their developments. They shared sample elevations of what the structures
might look like and highlighted plans for extensive landscaping outside the walls of their proposed gated community.
Taylor Morrison’s plan calls for 24 single-family homes along the waterfront (likely to exceed $1 Million in price) and 60 three-story
townhomes along Dana Shores Drive and throughout the interior of the development (averaging $400,000 - $500,000 per unit). This plan,
compared to those of other builders who have bid on the land, presents a more favorable, neighborhood-friendly “high-dollar, limited-density”
design (compared to a high-density, low-rent apartment complex). This is an important positive in terms of potential impact on congestion
and property values.
Residents asked a variety of questions to understand how the development might impact Dana Shores, Pelican Island
and surrounding neighborhoods, including greenway and access aesthetics, property values, traffic patterns and
congestion, resource and storm water considerations, and major community initiatives such as undergrounding electrical
power lines and restoring the grandeur of the Old Memorial Highway WWI Oak Canopy. Answers were captured and
can be found online as part of the packet Taylor Morrison submitted for their rezoning. (You may easily access a copy
of this at http://bit.ly/TMPDMeetingSummary.
Since Taylor Morrison stepped in with its bid to develop the property, our civic association began working with its team
on ways to promote communication and alignment with ongoing community initiatives, aesthetics, and neighborhood priorities. These efforts
remain underway.
If all goes according to Taylor Morrison’s timetable, they would begin demolition in early 2018, and begin development and building of
model homes by the end of that year. Full build-out would take an estimated 18- to 24-months. Since the meeting, they have received
approval from Hillsborough County’s Development Services Department. Next, they will seek approval from the Hillsborough County Board
of County Commissioners.

FOURTH OF JULY CELEBRATIONS
SAFETY HARBOR 4TH OF JULY CELEBRATIONS
Each year, many Dana Shores families celebrate July 4th on their
boats, with front-row seating to Safety Harbor’s fireworks display.
The city offers a great display launched from a barge near the harbor.
Assuming cooperative weather,
fireworks are scheduled to start at
exactly 9 p.m. Tune into channel
68 and hail Dana Shores on your
way there if you want to raft up.
A FRIENDLY HEADS UP
When it comes to fireworks,
F lo r id a
l aw o n l y a l lo ws
homeowners to use “sparklers” (e.g., snakes, glow worms, smoke
devices, trick noisemakers, party poppers, booby traps, and snappers),
and only allows their use within the homeowner’s yard (not streets,
parks, or beaches). Even though they are easy to purchase, other
consumer fireworks (e.g., projectile fireworks, M-80s, and bottle
rockets) are illegal to use without a city permit and meeting other
special-use criteria.
Deputies from Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office have visited
Dana Shores on recent holidays to address firework activity. Due to
recent burn bans and fires in Hillsborough County, along with our
own work throughout the year to develop a more robust law
enforcement presence within and around our community, it’s
reasonable to expect stronger policing of firework activity this year.
Please also be aware that we have homeowners who are nursing
chronically ill loved ones at home, who have babies at home, and who
have pets that may be afraid of the fireworks. We suspect they would
all sincerely appreciate the avoidance of local fireworks.
We hope this information helps everyone remain safe and avoid any
unpleasant surprises.

CAPTURING THE RICH HISTORY OF DANA SHORES
Our neighborhood associations feel fortunate to have many talented volunteers of all ages, backgrounds, and interests. Jack Wood has been
working with the Dana Shores Civic Association over the last year as part of his Eagle Scout project. This is a great win-win opportunity and
one we are looking forward to engaging several more residents in. Jack’s project summary is provided below. Please reach out to him directly
if you would like to be involved.
My Name is Jack Wood and I am a resident of Dana Shores. I am looking to obtain the rank of Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts
of America and by doing so need to do a service project for my community.
I have chosen to make a historical video documentary about our lovely Dana Shores and will be conducting video interviews of
some of the neighbors to gather stories about our community. I am inviting you to be interviewed as part of this historical
video. Interviews will be conducted on a time slot basis on July29, 2017, between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. If you
would like to be a part of this, please RSVP to patrickjacksonwood@gmail.com or call me at 813.924.9389
Thank you and I look forward to hearing your stories,
Jack
BETTER TIDAL FLOW AND WATER QUALITY
Last year, we shared studies showing the return of Tampa Bay’s overall water quality to 1950s levels and seagrasses returning to the bay at a
record pace of 660 acres per year. Improvements in Old Tampa Bay and waters surrounding Dana Shores have lagged, but that could soon
change.
The Dana Shores website lists several easy but highly impactful actions residents can take to help restore our water quality,
keep pollutants down, and maintain boat clearance. We all make a difference, and with a little knowledge and awareness
each of us can have a positive impact. We ask that all residents read about yard waste, storm drains, pet waste, fertilizers,
and oil/fuel spills at http://bit.ly/WaterQualityandMarineLife
Our role mostly involves restricting pollutants. Although it is critical, it is not adequate. We also have low salinity levels
on the north side of the Courtney Campbell Causeway due to restricted waterflow. Many seagrasses have difficulty living
in low-salinity conditions and, without adequate seagrass, it is difficult to have a healthy coastal ecosystem. Seagrass colonies reduce
sediment and erosion, absorb nutrients from runoff, and provide nursery habitats.
From time to time, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) partners with the
Water Management District to work on stormwater treatment initiatives that will have a
significant, positive impact on the environment and can provide credits FDOT can then
use on future roadway projects. This essentially means they can make major
enhancements in one area to help make up for deficits in another area where it may be
more difficult or impossible to mitigate their environmental impact.
After many years of discussion about this project, we are thrilled to learn that FDOT has
planned a major stormwater project in our backyard! The proposed project will
significantly improve water quality on the north side of the Courtney Campbell Causeway
and will provide environmental credits that can be used from here to Anna Marie Island.
Holly Simmons, our DSCA Vice President, has spoken with representatives from both the
FDOT and EPC to find out more. Here are her updates:
FDOT plans to invest $10.5M in constructing a 229-foot flat, free-flow bridge along the causeway just west of Ben T. Davis Beach. It will not
be navigable for boat or kayaks. Instead, its purpose is to allow better tidal flushing. It currently takes about 7 days for the water to turn over
in this area of Old Tampa Bay. Once the bridge is constructed, turnover time should be cut down to 2.5 days.
What do we hope this will mean? First, higher and more stable salinity levels on the north side of the bridge resulting in better seagrass, better
clarity, and better fishing. Second, better water movement, which will assist in flushing nutrients out of Old Tampa Bay, lowering water
temperatures in the shallows, and reducing algae blooms.
The project has been funded and is currently under bid. The winner of the RFP should be determined by October 2017 and, if all goes well,
construction should begin in the fall/winter of 2017 and be complete by November 15, 2018.
Plans include keeping the same number of lanes, their widths, and the trail open during construction. Once the project is underway, kiosks are
planned at both ends of the construction area for bicyclists who want to learn more.
FDOT is required to monitor the area for at least five years to ensure water quality and seagrass areas improve and other problems do not
arise. Seagrass has returned to more than 200 acres in the Florida Keys after replacing a portion of their causeway with a bridge and, closer to
home, 100 acres of seagrass were added after replacing part of the main causeway into Fort DeSoto Park. We have similar hopes for restoring
up to 80 acres of seagrass in the Rocky Point area!
The Dana Shores Civic Association has also been working with FDOT, EPC, and the Southwest Florida Water Management District
(SWFMD) to help ensure appropriate planning around any potential concerns. Please contact Holly Simmons (info@danashores.com or (954)
464-3532) if you have questions, suggestions, or other input.

BOATERS NEEDED FOR CRAB TRAP
REMOVAL: July 15
Tampa Bay Watch is recruiting
volunteer boaters
to remove
abandoned crab traps from the bay.
The temporary closure on July 15
offers a unique opportunity. It allows
volunteers to remove any blue or stone
crab traps from the water because,
during the closed season, these traps are considered
derelict. ReelCycle will then pick up the traps from each
volunteer location to recycle the trap material.

important species. They pose a navigational hazard to
boaters and can cause damage to valuable and sensitive
habitats such as seagrass. Manatees, dolphins and sea turtles
can also become entangled in the trap line causing injury or
death.
Who: If you plan to remove traps, you must be a part of an
organized effort that has been authorized by FWC. Anyone
with a boat who is willing to help remove abandoned traps
from the waters will be welcomed. Tampa Bay Watch
will provide tarps, but your boat will get dirty.
When: Saturday, July 15 from 9 a.m. to noon
Where: Six different locations throughout the bay,
including Upper Tampa Bay (meeting at the Courtney
Campbell Causeway boat ramp)

If you know of a location of derelict crab traps,
please take a moment to proactively provide the
location of the trap along with any other pertinent
information on a GPS or chart so that volunteers can
take care of them during the closure.
You may contact Serra Herndon
(sherndon@tampabaywatch.org or 727.867.8166 Ext.
