4. FIRST AID MEASURES
Move victim to fresh air. Give artificial respiration ONLY if breathing has stopped. Give
cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) if there is no breathing AND no pulse. Oxygen administration may
be beneficial in this situation but should only be administered by personnel trained in its use. Obtain
medical attention IMMEDIATELY.
Inhalation:
Flush skin with running water and wash affected areas thoroughly with soap and water. Start flushing
while removing contaminated clothing. Obtain medical attention IMMEDIATELY. At elevated
temperatures : See "Note to Physicians" below.
Skin Contact:
Immediately flush eyes with running water for a minimum of 20 minutes. Hold eyelids open during
flushing. If irritation persists, repeat flushing. Obtain medical attention IMMEDIATELY. Do not
transport victim until the recommended flushing period is completed unless flushing can be continued
during transport. At elevated temperatures : See "Note to Physicians" below.
Eye Contact:
Do not attempt to give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. If victim is alert and not
convulsing, rinse mouth out and give 1/2 to 1 glass of water to dilute material. IMMEDIATELY contact
local Poison Control Centre. Vomiting should only be induced under the direction of a physician or a
poison control centre. If spontaneous vomiting occurs, have victim lean forward with head down to
avoid breathing in of vomitus, rinse mouth and administer more water. IMMEDIATELY transport victim
to an emergency facility.
Ingestion:
Skin contact can cause irritation, especially under the finger nails (and other confined spaces such as
under rings or watch bands). May cause defatting, drying and cracking of the skin. Excessive contact
with powder may cause drying of the skin due to absorption of moisture and oils. At elevated
temperatures : Burns (thermal) can occur if not promptly removed.
Skin Contact:
Not likely to be absorbed through the skin.
Skin Absorption:
This product causes irritation, redness and pain. Excessive contact with powder may cause drying of
mucous membranes of the eyes due to absorption of moisture and oils. May cause lachrymation
(excessive tears) and blurred vision. At elevated temperatures : Burns (thermal) can occur if not
promptly removed.
Eye Contact:
This substance is toxic if swallowed. This product causes irritation, a burning sensation of the mouth
and throat and abdominal pain. May irritate mouth, esophagus, and stomach. Ingestion of very high
levels may cause gastroenteritis.
Ingestion:
Effects (irritancy) on the skin and eyes may be delayed, and damage may occur without the sensation
or onset of pain. Strict adherence to first aid measures following any exposure is essential.
May cause visual disturbances, low blood pressure, faintness, methemoglobinemia, cyanosis, hemolytic
anemia, pneumoconiosis, accelerated heart rate, kidney damage and central nervous system (CNS)
depression. CNS depression is characterized by headache, dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting
and incoordination. Severe overexposures may lead to coma and possible death due to respiratory
failure. Signs and symptoms of kidney damage generally progress from oliguria, to blood in the urine, to
total renal failure. Pneumoconiosis is the deposition of dust in the lungs and the tissue's reaction to its
presence. When exposure to the dust is severe or prolonged, the lungs' defenses are overwhelmed.
Initial manifestation of methemoglobinemia is cyanosis, characterized by navy blue, almost black lips,
tongue, and mucous membranes, with skin colour being slate gray. Further manifestation is
characterized by vomiting, headache, blurring of vision, ataxia, weakness, dizziness, stupor, rapid
heartbeat, syncope, dyspnea, respiratory distress and death due to anoxia.
Potassium Nitrate : Symptoms of potassium poisoning may occur. These include slow heartbeat,
accelerated breathing, muscle weakness and, in severe cases, paralysis.
If ingested, Nitrates may be reduced to nitrites by bacteria in the digestive tract. Signs and symptoms
of nitrite poisoning include cyanosis (due to methemoglobin formation), nausea, dizziness and
increased heart rate. Overexposure to Sodium Nitrite causes relaxation of smooth muscle, especially of
small blood vessels. The syncope or shock induced by large doses is due initially to the pooling of
blood in dilated postarteriolar vessels, notably venules and even large veins. Doses that produce no
symptoms or only slight circulatory changes in man when in the supine position can induce syncope
when the victim is upright (6).
Tolerance (pharmacodynamic) to the smooth muscle-relaxant effect of nitrites rapidly develops. This
tolerance disappears rapidly and a short absence from exposure may lead to severe poisoning from
amounts that were previously safe (6). Tolerance to the induction of methemoglobinemia by nitrite
exposure does not develop, or is very minimal (6).

The vasodilation caused by Sodium Nitrite is not blocked by atropine or by any recognized drug.
Epinephrine, whose principal vascular action is the constriction of arterioles, is ineffective and perhaps
dangerous here, as is pitressin, whose chief effects are exerted on the coronary bed. Probably
epinephrine and related compounds should be strictly prohibited. (3)
Treatment for Nitrates and Nitrites:
1. Empty stomach if ingested. Follow with activated charcoal and a cathartic.
2. Hypotension unresponsive to fluid replacement and patient positioning can be treated with dopamine.
3. Monitor CBC, methemoglobin levels, vital signs.
4. Maintain ventilation. Administer oxygen 100 % by mask if there is evidence of cyanosis.
5. If oxygen fails to reverse cyanosis or if methemoglobin levels are greater than 30 %, intravenous
administration of 1 % methylene blue, 1 - 2 mg/Kg body weight over a 5-minute interval can be of
value. If cyanosis persists after one hour, repeat the treatment, but do not exceed 7 mg/Kg total dose.
Intramuscular injection of 1 mg of Cyanocobalamin (Vitamin B12) may also help. (3)
6. Intravenous fluids and blood transfusions should be performed if methemoglobinemia is
unresponsive to methylene blue. (3)
Contact with hot molten materials cause severe burns to skin contact areas and eyes. Generally, it is
recommended not to remove molten materials that has hardened in contact with skin, but to cool it by
gently flooding that area with copious quantities of cool water. In all such cases, immediately seek
medical attention.
Medical conditions that may be aggravated by exposure to this product include neurological,
cardiovascular and skin disorders, diseases of the skin, eyes or respiratory tract.

Sensitivity to Mechanical Impact:
Not available.
Rate of Burning:
Not available.
Explosive Power:
Not expected to be sensitive to static discharge.
Sensitivity to Static Discharge:
Use water only, in as much volume as possible in order to cool the burning mass quickly. Chemical
extinguishers are useless for this type of fire. Attempts to smother a fire involving this product will be
ineffective as it is its own oxygen source.
Fire Extinguishing Media:
Fire-exposed containers should be kept cool by spraying with water to reduce pressure. Spilled material
may cause floors and contact surfaces to become slippery.
Instructions to the Fire Fighters:
Self-contained apparatus should be worn in a fire involving this material. Thermal decomposition will
cause reddish-brown nitrogen oxides to be released; these can be precipitated by water fog. Use self-
contained breathing apparatus and protective clothing.

This product contains a nitrite which may react with amines to form a nitrosamine in acidic
environments such as the stomach. Some nitrosamines have been shown to be carcinogenic in
laboratory animals. Simultaneous exposure to nitrites should be avoided since many medications and
chemicals contain an amine group. (3)
Synergistic Materials:
Pregnant rats fed diet of 2.5 % Potassium Nitrate during the second trimester showed maternal toxic
symptoms and gross fetal malformations at term. When the offsprings mated and fed under same
conditions, slight fetal toxicity include some types of anomalies was observed. (4)
Guinea pigs were given 300 to 30,000 ppm of Potassium Nitrate in water for periods ranging from
100 to 240 days. Reproduction in the female was impaired at 30,000 ppm of Potassium Nitrate with
reproductive performance only 8 % of that of controls. However, male fertility was not affected. (4)
A 10 % aqueous solution of Sodium Nitrate applied continuously for 5 minutes was practically
innocuous to the surface of rabbit eyes. The conjunctivae became mildly hyperemic, but the corneas
remained clear, and the eyes rapidly returned completely to normal. Hyperemic describes the presence
of an increased amount of blood in a part or organ. (4)
Chromosomal aberration tests in vitro were carried out on Chinese hamster cells grown in culture
with Sodium Nitrate were positive. (4)
Sodium Nitrite was not carcinogenic when fed to rats in the diet at 0.2 or 0.5 % up to 115 weeks. (3)
The fetus may be especially sensitive to the cardiovascular effects of nitrites and nitrites do cross the
placental barrier to generate methemoglobinemia. However, no clear evidence of nitrite-induced
mammalian embryotoxicity or teratogenicity exists. Nevertheless, it is advisable that the pregnant
mother keep her nitrite exposure to a minimum. In some tests, but not in others, the compound
produced genetic damage in bacterial and mammalian cell cultures, as well as in tests in animals.
Sodium nitrite has been shown to induce somatic cell mutations in hamsters given 100 mg/kg orally.
(1) It does not produce heritable genetic damage. (3)
