HNCDI work streams - Tackling industry
challenges
 Access Point Overview:
 The Explore work stream will apply digital and AI technologies,
through proof-of-concept projects, to solve organisational (industry,
professional services and public sector) challenges.
 The results from an Explore proof-of-concept project will belong to
the participating organisation. Any IP generated during an Explore
project will remain with STFC and IBM.
 The Explore work stream will deliver 104 projects
 Benefit of Participating:
 Provides the opportunity, through (zero-cost) proof of concepts to
explore and evaluate data-driven AI technologies to help enhance
an organisations productivity and technical capability.
 Provides the opportunity to understand ‘does this technology work
with my data on my use case’
 Outcome: Provides Participating organisations retain the results of
the proof-of-concept project.
 Cost to Participating Organisations:
 Organisations participating in Explore projects will not be charged,
however, organisations are expected to contribute with active
participation in projects through providing real-life & industrially
relevant challenges and project-relevant data
 Access Point Overview:
 The Excelerate work stream will embed digital solutions across
industry and public sector.
 The Excelerate work stream will deliver 32 projects
 Benefit and Outcomes:
 Provides development and integration of practical AI and data
driven solutions across an organisations current work-flow.

Implementation of practical AI and data driven solutions to
improve productivity and sustainability
 Cost to Participating Organisations:
 Each organisation participating in an Excelerate project will be
required to contribute to the overall project costs. This
contribution can be in-kind, in-cash or a combination of both.
 Adoption of Excelerate project outcomes might require licensing
of HNCDI Programme IP
Case study
Novel drug encapsulation
Challenge: Predict structural behaviour when
using novel chemicals
Approach: Molecular simulation of encapsulation
Benefits: Pre-screening hard to manufacture
chemicals before lab based experiment
AI enhanced simulation
Case study
Real-time rail delay prediction
Generating more accurate delay
predictions based on real-time data feed

Case study
Smart crop protection
Building pest risk prediction models with the
potential to:
• Enable the farming industry to more accurately
plan preventative measures
• Reduce crop losses
• Drive down insurance rates through lower
probability of crop damage
Capability Build
Case study
Cognitive waste water treatment
Using artificial intelligence (AI) to dynamically
manage the waste water treatment process
with the potential to:
• Adapt responsively to environment conditions
e.g. weather forecast
• Make water treatment plants more efficient
• Minimise costly regulatory violations
