Are you planning to replace your plumbing
fixtures at home soon? Take a look at how
long common plumbing fixtures last, so
you will know when to replace them.
Knowing when to replace your plumbing
fixtures at home is essential for everyone.
These fixtures are in use every time, so you
have to be ready to replace them with new
ones. Once they have reached their
maximum life expectancy, consider
replacing them to prevent plumbing issues
from arising.
Being in use for almost 24 hours a day
and seven days a week, your plumbing
fixtures at home are definitely among the
busiest things you have. In just a matter
of seconds, you already have cold or hot
water running through your faucets.
With just one push, you already have
water flushing down your toilet. In most
homes, plumbing fixtures are often one of
the things which are not regularly
maintained because they always go
unnoticed.
With plumbing pipes hidden inside
walls or under the sink, it is hard to see if
they need to be repaired. However, that
does not mean that you don't have to
check them up from time to time. You
also have to consider their lifespans, so
you will know when to replace them.
What Are Plumbing Fixtures?
Plumbing fixtures are your toilet, sink,
bathtub, shower, etc. Their main purpose
is for people to have a convenient way of
distributing and using water.
The Lifespan of Plumbing Fixtures
1. Pipes
Pipes are one of the main fixtures in your
plumbing system. It is what carries and
transports water to the other plumbing
fixtures in your home. Knowing what type of
pipes your plumbing system has is crucial
because different materials also have
varying life expectancies.
The most common type of pipe used,
Polyvinyl Chloride or more aptly known
as PVC, can last for up to 50 years. For
pipes made of steel, iron, or brass, you
can expect them to last for 50 to 70 years.
If your plumbing system happens to
have copper piping, you can expect those
to last for 80 years or more.
2. Toilets
Having cracks on your toilet means that you
have to get a replacement from a home depot
that sells plumbing fixtures right away.
Flushing issues can also be an indication that
you have to buy a new toilet already. Toilets
nowadays have a life expectancy of up to 50
years.
However, toilets are known to have
many moving parts inside them. You
might have to replace those parts during
your toilet's lifespan. If you think that
your water bill is higher than expected,
you have to check your toilet's
manufacturing date. Toilets produced
before 1994 are known to use more
water.
3. Faucets and Sinks
Faucets and sinks can also last long like
other plumbing fixtures. As long as they
are not structurally damaged and still not
beyond their life expectancy, a repair from
a plumber is enough once problems arise.
For undamaged faucets, however, you can
expect them to last for 15 to 20 years. Just
like in pipes, the type of material used for
your sink affects its life expectancy. Sinks
made using acrylic can last for 50 years.
For sinks made using enameled steel, they
can only last for ten years. Sinks made
using glass, copper, or porcelain can last
for 20 years or more, and sinks made using
soapstone can last for up to a century.
4. Water Heaters
Water heaters have two classifications—
tankless and tank. The typical ones, or the
tank water heaters, can last for around
eight to a maximum of 12 years. On the
other hand, tankless water heaters can last
for up to 20 years.
Tankless water heaters last longer because
they are only used on-demand, unlike tank
water heaters that operate continuously.
Water heaters are among the plumbing
fixtures that you can use for many
household chores, such as washing clothes
and cleaning dishes.
In addition, you can also use it sometimes
for taking a bath and washing your hands.
For that reason, it is ideal to have a
replacement for water heaters before they
reach the end of their lifespans.
