Why Wool Is One of the Most Popular Bedding Materials

Getting quality sleep is vital to our health and how we feel in life. All in all, we spend about a
third of our lives sleeping. During the night we go through multiple sleep cycles, which
include rapid eye movement (REM) and non-rapid eye movement (NREM) times. The
different cycles give our bodies a chance to heal and be rejuvenated. As we sleep, our minds
process what we have done and store important elements in our permanent memory. With
the right quality sleep, we wake up refreshed and ready to take on the next day.

As the night goes on, we go through stages of sleep in a continuing cycle. In Stage 1 (5 to 10
minutes), we experience a light and dreamy time of sleep, and can awaken easily if we sense
noise or movement. Stage 2 (about 20 minutes) sees us sink slightly deeper into sleep and
our heart rate slows and body temperature falls. During Stage 3, we transition to deep sleep
and brain waves then slow down. The 4th stage is a deep sleep of around 30 minutes in
which the body does its tissue repair. Stage 5 is REM sleep where we have increased brain
activity and dreams.

Wool Lets You Get a Comfortable Sleep

If you want to get a great night’s sleep, you have to keep your body at an optimal
temperature. When you are too hot or cold, instead of resting comfortably, you will be
tossing and turning all night long.

When you choose a wool quilt, it can help regulate temperature because the wool fibres
have natural air pockets which trap heat in cold weather and release heat in warmer
weather. This lets you sleep at a comfortable temperature any time of year.

Wool is More Breathable

A wool quilt will be more breathable than materials such as down fillings or synthetics. The
structure of the fibres in wool let the air move through easily.

Having a breathable wool doona will help lower humidity levels in the bedroom, and provide
better ventilation so are able to stay cool on hotter nights.

Wool Fibres Wick Away Moisture

Wool is able to absorb some thirty percent of its own weight in water without it feeling
clammy or damp next to your skin. If someone sweats at night, they can still feel
comfortable and dry if they have a wool doona.

By holding the moisture, wool also helps keep the bed dry and free of allergens.
