About ATO Duke

Duke University, ATO Xi Chapter - Founded 1872

To bind men together in a brotherhood based upon eternal and immutable principles, with a bond as strong as right itself and as lasting as humanity ; to know no North, no South, no East, no West, but to know man as man, to teach that true men the world over should stand together. Otis Allan Glazebrook, 1880.

Alpha Tau Omega began as an idea in the mind of a young Civil War veteran who wanted peace and reconciliation. His name was Otis Allan Glazebrook. His people were defeated, many of their cities burned, much of their countryside ravaged. But Glazebrook, who had helped bury the dead of both sides, believed in a better future. He saw the bitterness and hatred that followed the silencing of the guns and knew that a true peace would come not from force of law, but rather from with the hearts of men who were willing to work to rekindle a spirit of brotherly love.

Introduction
To the gentlemen of Duke’s Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity, Xi Chapter, we hope this
letter finds you well. As we continue to grow as a chapter, it is important for us to
recognize and reflect on our past as well as look into our future. We seek to honor
our alumni by providing contemporary news for the enjoyment (and nostalgia) of
all of our members. The backbone of ATO has always been the brotherhood, and
we hope our newly created bi-monthly newsletter will keep our former members
engaged and strengthen the brotherhood connection we have past graduation. We
are fully committed to keeping the newsletter consistent and meaningful, and
ensuring that it will become a cornerstone tradition integral to our fraternity. This is
a new practice, so do not hesitate to reach out to us with feedback. While the goal
of the letter is to keep you updated on current fraternity life, another important part
is covering alumni news; we want to include a section highlighting PC stories, so
please send us any pictures you have or tell us any wild stories you may have
experienced, regardless of if they occurred at Duke or sometime afterwards. Please
provide us with shoutouts for brothers’ personal achievements, as we will be
highlighting alumni achievements. We would love to hear about promotions, a new
baby, travel stories, or contributions made while at Duke. Please stay tuned over
the coming weeks for important announcements, social news, and the occasional
rumors.

Alumni Weekend 2025
Alumni Weekend 2025 will take place March 28th through March 30th. As part of
our commitment to strengthening our alumni connection, expect bigger and better
events throughout the entire weekend. While details are still being finalized, we are
currently working on both a Friday evening golf event as well as a Saturday
crawfish boil, which will include live music, drinks, ruski, and a bonfire to finish
off the night. We are also working on customized merch for both the event and our
alumni. Stay tuned for further details and an RSVP form, and we are excited to see
you all soon!

Social News
What a semester it has been for the Taus. With all of PC ‘23 back in Durham, Brick
is ready for hosting and liquor stores are ready for the Taus to deplete their entire
supply of beer for a single night of racking.

Rush:
The rush team did an incredible job this year, hosting truly remarkable events.
Moe’s BBQ, a snowy bonfire, an electric Honky Taunk-themed date event, a
formal, and Bs & 40s with poker and Ruski. Couldn’t ask for anything better
We ended up desperately needing the bonfire, our hats, and our borgs for the snow that fell during our Round 2 Rush event
After a terrific performance, we invited the band for a kickback at ours Rush Chair John Tolsma enjoying beer with Brother Coleman Whitehead

Our houses hosted pregames for the Rush Formal. Pictured here is Wilko Rush Chair Brock Benson with his date
Brothers Ryan Israel, Shaan Patel, Connor Flannery, Ryan Selig, Hansel Heres

Our formal was inspired by Brother Gabriel Hamoui from Brazil, who designed our Boiler Room-style setup and performed as
our DJ. The music was great, which is not a surprise considering he just performed for Bunt in Dublin, Ireland

Bid Day:
Bid Day was a remarkable success for the Taus, as we hosted a memorable event at
Devines. Beer, wings, and heartfelt speeches from their soon-to-be brothers were
all PC ‘25 needed to decide that ATO was the right place for them.

We are happy to report a strong pledge class of 35 distinguished gentlemen, who
are already invaluable to the fraternity and our traditions as they undergo their new
member education process.

Mixers:
Sorority relations are going great this semester. Mixer after mixer, the sororities
love coming to see the Taus. And who can blame them? So far we have mixed with
APhi, Kappa, Tri Delt, and Pi Phi, with plenty more events planned. Shackles
turning into a late night is scheduled for this Friday. We swear we saw Flannels and
Flokos on the social calendar. Space Gamm was there as well? Brick is ready for it.

Brothers Bools:
The Taus have always been known for their “bools”, or our informal kickbacks.
The newly used word is for our newly-created tradition of ATO Brothers
‘Booling’; PC ‘25 has been organizing events every Friday for all the Taus to
gather, hang out, and bond at. So far, our new class have successfully organized a
barbeque and a night out at the pub. It’s safe to say that a long week of classes can
not end properly without a good hangout with the brothers. As it is a new practice,
we are open to event suggestions - please reach out with any ideas!

Duke-UNC:
February 1st was a great day for Duke, of course, but also for the Taus. UNC
gameday treated us well. As you all likely saw, those poor kids from down
Tobacco Road didn’t stand a chance against us, and you know the men of ATO had
a time before and after. Early morning steak, eggs, and ruski at Wilko house built
up nicely for Crowell Quad where a rowdy Tau tailgate had just begun. The Taus
who tented went especially wild, as they were fresh off finally being able to sleep
in their own warm beds. The night culminated with the only thing better than a win
against UNC: a Brick late night. What a day.

Top Right: Brothers Camden Reeves, Elliot Jarnot, and Christian Mahalik

Upcoming Social Events

While it has been an amazing social semester for the brothers of ATO, it will only
get better. This year, we are excited to introduce a new night party:
Taumorrowland. Details of the event are still being planned by our social team, so
suggestions and ideas are more than encouraged. We still have Carolina Cup,
Mardi Gras, Away Formal, RNA, Ruski tournament, Frat Wedding, and Beach
Week at Catalina Manor to look forward to, so the Taus are certainly on the way
up. If you have any ideas or suggestions for any of our upcoming events, please let
us know. We would greatly love and appreciate any kind of support in planning
them. Looking forward to the semester,
- Social Team

Taus Abroad ‘24
From sipping Guinness in European bars to exploring the Moroccan dunes, the
junior class had an unbelievable time during their study abroad experience this fall.
While the Taus remained devoted to their academic and professional success, they
made sure to explore all that living internationally had to offer, living in a variety
of cities. We had Taus studying in Berlin, Barcelona, Paris, London, Madrid,
Rome, and even Sydney. They traveled to Ibiza, Oktoberfest, Amsterdam,
Vietnam, Vienna, Thailand, and New Zealand. They certainly set the bar high for
PC 24’; time will tell if they can live up to it.

Notable Duke ATO Alumni

For this week’s notable alumnus we will be highlighting Graham Barton, ‘24. After
a stellar football career at Duke with two years of all-conference and All-American
honors, Barton was drafted in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft as the 26th
overall pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Barton earned the position of starting
center during training camp, even though fourth-year veteran Robert Hainsey was
still on the team. Barton was the epitome of brotherhood during his time at Duke,
as despite his lofty status, he never acted any different than his fellow Taus. In fact,
he was not even that great at Ruski. Guess we can’t win them all, huh, Barton? We
are glad to say our football identity is still going strong, as Jack Small, Bradley
Cooper, Jack Ronillo, and Jayden Moore accepted bids to ATO. We look forward
to watching Barton represent the Taus on and off the field, and wish him the best of
luck with his future NFL career.

Gift Acknowledgment
Thank you to Mike McCormick, Russ Ramsland, Michael Mandi, Jack
Berlin, Joe Clarke, John Clark, William Johnstone, John Charbonneau, Austin
Ness, Holy Anderson, “Bull” Joe Euler, Matt Baker, and Thomas Rhoads for their
considerable donations to the fraternity. Many kegs have been purchased in your
name.
An absolutely huge shoutout to Casey Chafkin for solo sponsoring the entire
ruski tournament last year. Thanks to him, Bo Aldridge and Drew Hottenstein
repeated as ATO Ruski Champions. Will they achieve the first threepeat in ATO
history? Are the referees and Taylor Swift on their side? We’ll find out at Catalina
Manor during Beach Week. If anyone would like to sponsor this year's tournament,
we are attempting to live stream the entire event and would appreciate any extra
support. Below are some Ruski highlights from last year.

rommates, having any prior knowledge of the event. Our closest experience to what section would have been like

Philanthropy
Durham Special Olympics has provided us with an opportunity to volunteer and
run their basketball league. As the reigning basketball fraternity champions, the
Taus involved will be refereeing the tournaments and coaching various teams to
victory. We have several non-profit faith groups for religious-oriented brothers to
lead, from Bible study groups to Shabbat on Friday nights. Additionally, we lead
group meetings to discuss politics, morality, and just general life philosophy. We
are working to secure other philanthropic events, including a blood drive, so if you
have any recommendations or possible connections we would love to hear from
you.

Brother of the Month
Liam “Chav” Chavez, Class of 24
Chavez is getting the nod as the Brother of the Month because of his long lasting
and continued contributions to ATO. Bored over winter break, Chavez decided to
single-handedly create the entire ATO alumni database, which allows our entire
organization to find anyone from any year working in a particular area of interest.
Through his efforts, brothers from PCs generations apart have built meaningful
connections, both socially and professionally. He was also not afraid of the grunt
work in the fraternity; he single handedly reorganized Brick, converted a storage
room into a speakeasy, and set up our wiring last year. As a former social chair, he
has continued to stay involved, making an appearance at our recent Tri Delt mixer
and to watch basketball with the boys. Currently working a job at a new staffing
company named Traba, Chav put Shaan (Class of 25) in touch with his boss in
hopes of possibly landing him a career. Above all this, Chav is well respected and
has deservingly earned his “nice guy” reputation, and is a clear Brother of the
Month.
